Kanan walked in to Luke's today expecting pancakes. A lot of pancakes.

What he was met with was... not that.

"We'll make them to order," the cook explained patiently, "but they can get them for free over at the park today anyway."

Kanan... actually had to concede that point. Weird.

With a shrug, Kanan settled behind the counter and occupied himself with cleaning during the quieter, 'during the brunch' hours of the day. Yeah, his lightsaber was still assembled and hanging from his belt. Just because Darth Vowrawn was pleasant didn't mean Kanan wasn't going to be paranoid anyway.

"They'd better," Jack said. Her smile turned a little dark, "They stole Kaidan with one. They brought me here with one. Means there's some way to do 'em on our end. I have this school full of overpowered little shits who'd just love an adventure out into space to see if we can't rip it open from our end for a change."

"If the little fuckers think I'm leaving Kaidan stranded here one more fucking day, they're going to learn firsthand how I earned my rep."

"Funny enough, when I was stranded here, it was also mynocks," Kanan mused. And then he grinned and shook his head. "I almost want to witness this myself."

She shook her head, "We don't have ship-eating shitheads where I'm from."

Jack looked thoughtfully at the freezer. "I bet one of those would fit in a duffel."

"... I mean, if the ones I threw in there haven't come to."

He paused a moment.

"They reproduce by mitosis, though. You never have just one mynock."

"I could just knock 'em out again," she answered breezily.

Scowled at him when he used logic. "You had to say that, didn't you? You've definitely been hanging around the big dumb lunk too long. You've developed the ability to suck all the fun right out of life."

Jack glared at the freezer. "If EDI wasn't stuck in the damned ship.."

"Hey, could be fun. Introduce a whole new invasive species, figure out if there's anything in your galaxy a mynock won't eat. Find out if anyone there hates their taste buds enough to get their revenge by eating them, too..."

No, Kanan. You've already ruined it.

Thoroughly spoilt. Jack scowled at him. "We have Krogan. There is nothing a Krogan won't eat."

Complained. "EDI's a ship, Kanan."

"Soooo she wouldn't like mynocks, is what you're telling me here."

"No of course she fucking wouldn't," Jack complained. Plopped her chin into her hands and glared at the freezer door some more.

"Damnit. They'd have been fun, too."

"That's fine, we can hook you up with some other annoying creature from my galaxy, instead. I think you'd like nexu."

No reason.

"...the fuck's a nexu?" Jack asked.

Kanan grinned.

"You start with a cat," he said, "but you make it a meter tall at the shoulder. Give it a few extra eyes, claws you couldn't wrap a fist around, and a mouth that makes a bear trap look cuddly."

Jack snorted and dug in her back pocket. A short rummage later and she'd pulled out her wallet and flapped it open to the picture of Eezo.

"That's my good boy," she deadpanned.

Kanan leaned in for a better look.

"So you do have something like akk dogs where you're from." He grinned. "That's a big dumb dog grin if ever I saw one."

He was a little excited, so sue him. That was the closest thing to a proper dog he'd seen on Earth since coming to Earth.

"Varren," Jack informed him just a little smugly. "They're originally from Tuchanka, the Krogan homeworld. Eezo's from Thessia. He's biotic. Wrex borrowed him so the kids could have some hunt-and-play time."

She loved that damned varren.

"Akk-dogs are Force-sensitive," Kanan shared, grinning at the picture. "Never really thought of getting myself one, but the dog I do have was a bit of a surprise. Wouldn't mind meeting yours, sometime."

"I promised that Sparkle kid some varren playtime. We can make room for two," Jack promised him.

"I look forward to it," Kanan replied with a grin. "And here I'm not even a pet person."

He kept saying that, but he'd absolutely murder someone if they came after his dog. So.

"Two years ago and I'd have told you I couldn't stand kids or pets. No emotional entanglements. Nothing I couldn't walk away from and nothing I had to be responsible for," Jack said wryly.

"Now I'm a fucking teacher and I have a badass biotic pet varren and like that's not enough, sometimes I go destroy a pit fighting ring and bring home six or seven more." She made a small growling noise, "On top of that, an entire damn ship full of people who think of me as family."

She felt the same way. It was more of a small handful; she didn't feel that way about everyone on the Normandy.

"Kind of sounds like that sort of thing sneaks up on you," Kanan noted, in the tone of voice of a man who was beginning to see very similar things starting to happen in his own life. "The being a teacher bit is never going to stop being weird."

"It's as close as I ever want to come to having kids, that's for fucking sure," she stated firmly, "Even if I could have my own. I'll just train other people's and send 'em back to Mum and Dad with a whole new fucking vocabulary."

"Seems like an important life skill to me," Kanan decided. "You have to know the words in order to know where to use them, right?"

"Yeah, that reminds me. Kark sounds like it's equal to fuck, but where are the tufts because that just sounded downright dirty?" Jack smirked at him.

"You'll have to ask a Kalleran for the answer to that one," Kanan laughed, shaking his head. "It's way more fun that way."

"We don't have that race in my galaxy," Jack said pointedly, "but I have you right here in front of me."
