Covent Gardens Flowers. Monday

Nell was a bit nervous about her first day of work, but confident that she would learn to do all of the things required of her. To settle her nerves she wandered among the flowers and plants, touching them and their soil and encouraging them to grow. There was one plant in the back that felt a bit sickly, so she put a finger in the soil and willed it to get better and bloom.

By the end of her shift it had perked up considerably and was beginning to open some beautiful purple flowers.

Never fear; Peter wasn't about to drop a new employee in on their own.

He showed up midway through the day, looking around for her and smiling. "Hi, Nell. How's everything going?"

Nell looked up from the plant she was coaxing to bloom and smiled shyly at Peter. At which point the plant burst into beautiful blossoms. "Oh, good on you!" Nell said to the plant, then blushed a little as she looked back at Peter. "I'm sorry, it's just this-un has been trying so hard to bloom. I'm doing good, thank you kindly for asking."

Peter smiled. "That's great. You being good, and that plant blooming. I haven't had a lot of luck with it. I guess it likes you better than me."

"It just needed some encouragement," Nell said shyly. "I told you I have a way with them. And I do like it here. Makes me feel a little less homesick."

"I'm glad," Peter said. "Anything that helps. You or them."

"You have a beautiful store," Nell said shyly. "Is it okay if I come here other days - even if I'm not working - and maybe plant some of my own things? I got seeds from the big garden in DC, that I'd love to try to grow."

"Come whenever you like," Peter said, smiling. "If you want to claim a corner, go right ahead. Just tag them with your name, and I'll let the others know they're not for sale."

Nell smiled at him. "Thank you. That's very kind of you. I promise I won't take away from time I'm supposed to be working for you."

Peter laughed a little. "Not much goes on. You'll have plenty of time, don't worry about it." He paused. "Well, there's a few weeks around holidays that can get pretty busy, but otherwise not really."

"Around the holidays?" Nell asked. "Like Christmas, you mean?"

"Christmas a little," Peter agreed. "Easter is worse. And Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the busiest. But we've got a while before then."

The church didn't celebrate Valentine's Day or Mother's Day and the other two, well, she supposed in a place where people didn't grow their own stuff, they might need flowers for decorations. Or maybe...

"Huh. I guess I thought it was only in books that people gave each other flowers. I hadn't thought that was a real thing. Is that why those days are busy?"

"That's why," Peter confirmed. "A lot of them buy a lot of flowers. Bouquets mostly, instead of plants. Some people are picky, too. You can see Christmas as a dry run - it shouldn't be that bad, but it'll still be a little more fast-paced than now."

"Oh my," Nell said. "Well, I guess I'm good at gettin' the details right so that should help, right?"

"It will," Peter assured her. "Plus my phone number's at the till. If you need any help, I'm just a phone call away. I'm just dropping people into things, I promise."

"Thank you," Nell said shyly. "I'll surely do that if I've a need to."

Peter smiled again. "Please do. Don't worry, you'll be fine."
