Éponine was used to the mailboxes occasionally popping open and showering the post office lobby in confetti, or letting loose hordes of generally-not-too-unpleasant insects, or other such mild inconveniences that were at least somewhat amusing. She was not exactly prepared for one of them to keep popping open and attempting to suck any loose objects in its immediate vicinity in.

So far it seemed to have about as much suction power as a very old handheld cordless vacuum cleaner with 30% of its battery life yet, but she wasn't taking any chances; that entire bank of mailboxes was cordoned off with bright yellow CAUTION tape. BE CAREFUL GETTING YOUR MAIL, read a hand-lettered sign (in red ink) over that section, just in case the yellow tape wasn't warning enough.

"Are you at least taking things anywhere interesting?" she yelled into the mailbox when its door swung open for about the dozenth time that morning, taking the lid of her coffee cup with it and leaving her to scramble for napkins from the resulting splash.

The mailbox didn't answer. She supposed that was rather rude of it.
