Pick Your Poison, Wednesday

You know, for a guy who went to school for costume design, who absolutely loved this damn holiday, you'd think that Sparkle would have put some mad effort into getting his costume done in time for today. But between worrying about Atton and being a weasel for like a week, any of his really worthwhile Halloween prep time had kind of fallen to the wayside.

So he was at work dressed as himself, but three years younger, donning an old studded jacket he hadn't worn in forever, spiking his hair as best as he was able considering it was so much shorter than it used to be, wearing the dark eye make-up. And he had his stuffed black cat clinging to his shoulder, pretending it was Velcro.

There. Costume complete. This entire month had been an absolute clusterfuck and so many plans had fallen to the wayside as a result, but at least he'd managed that much.

Anyway, he was here, and he had the little soap packages that Fenris put together last week to hand out if anybody stopped by to trick-or-treat. Maybe during his break he'd go buy a shitload of those sticky toffee candies and see how many he could eat before his teeth tried to escape his head.

Halloweeeeeeen.

Kaidan had also done his lazy best for a costume, except he was killing two birds with one stone. He'd promised Sparkle that he'd play dress-up for him. One set of armor a few weeks ago, and now he'd donned a full set of dress blues for the occasion.

He'd made a small face at them - it had slipped his mind that he had four bars on the shoulder now, instead of the three he was used to seeing. That aside, full blues including the hat and properly shined shoes were walking into PYP with both hands full of froofy coffee drinks.

"Morning," Kaidan greeted, "Happy Halloween."

Priorities: Sparkle's drink was handed to him before Kaidan began his once-over of the goth look.

"Happy Halloween," Sparkle said, reaching to take that drink and looking Kaidan up and down really thoroughly. "I like it. Never wear anything else."

Apparently, he approved.

Kaidan laughed and sipped his own coffee, "Nah. I'm more comfortable in cargo pants and t-shirts. I did promise, and this seemed as good an occasion as any to dust it off."

He eyed Sparkle again, "So this is how you used to dress?" They'd discussed it the week prior but the look was a little different in regular clothing instead of the outfit Jack had sent.

"More or less, yeah," Sparkle agreed with a shrug. "Most of that old shit doesn't fit anymore, and I threw out all my torn jeans, like, a year ago anyway. But spikes, studs, whatever shitty clothing I can tear a pair of sleeves from..."

He looked much better without sleeves these days than he had at nineteen. That had been a weird rush of shit to the brain this morning before he'd pulled on his old jacket.

"You should definitely show Hernando," Kaidan grinned at him. "This would definitely meet with Jack's approval."

He examined the makeup. "I dig the eye makeup. It makes the green look poisonous."

A beat.

"Which, er, is a compliment. You said before it was supposed to be a dangerous look."

[myownface]

"Taken as such," Sparkle replied, grinning a little. "There would be a kickass superpower, right there. Poison eyes."

Look, he'd been on the island long enough that he knew both that it was totally possible it could happen someday, and that he was never going to be lucky enough for it to happen to him.

"Maybe I should have used 'venom'," Kaidan mused, "Because you're certainly capable of giving that kind of glare."

Not that either poison or venom sounded like the kind of super power he'd ever want. He'd be killing people by accidentally meeting their eyes or something.

"Did you bring the glow in the dark stuff?"

[myownface]

"Of course I did," Sparkle agreed, ducking behind the counter and then surfacing again with a kit of nail supplies. "Ghosts today, right?"

"Absolutely. It'll really make the outfit," Kaidan deadpanned.

Then he grinned.

"And I want little glow in the dark ghosts on my fingers, damnit. It'll look cool when I'm handing out candy."

Sparkle set down his drink and went for a rummage. Black polish, glow polish...

Ghosts really didn't need much more than that.

"It'll look totally badass," he agreed, smiling crookedly. "I'll probably just do mine in black. It'll finish the look."

Kaidan put a hand on the counter for him. He thought about the nail polish. "Can you do a chromed black? I feel like the color should speak of razors or knives or something."

Setting his coffee down, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his knife. A flick of his wrist snapped it open to display the matte-black handle and blade. The edge was a slice of silver sharpened so well it looked polished.

He shrugged. "Like that."

Sparkle considered the knife, looking thoughtfully at it before going back for another rummage.

"Lookit you, getting all fancy," he teased, pulling out a powder and inspecting it thoughtfully. "We can do chrome, we have that technology, don't worry."

"I meant yours, not mine," Kaidan laughed, folding the knife and putting it away one-handed. "I only need ghosts."

[myownface]

"Your ghosts need a backdrop," Sparkle pointed out, but shrugged and put the powder back anyway. "I'll consider it for me, we'll see how ambitious I'm feeling."

[spectre_alenko]

"Yeah, but they don't need a chrome backdrop," he grinned, "We'll save that for another day."

He sipped his coffee. "Are you going to the party?"

"Dunno," Sparkle admitted. "Dr. Lecter had wanted to put one on, but then I was, you know, a weasel. I think that fell through. And the costume thing kinda didn't work out. I figure I might just, like, hit the mainland and egg houses in fancy neighbourhoods or something."

[spectre_alenko]

"I got another one of those emails from someone I don't know," Kaidan grimaced, "inviting everyone. I already have plans, though. I promised Rosalie I'd hand out candy at her place while she took the kiddos out."

And he wasn't going to a party hosted by someone he didn't know. He just wasn't comfortable with that.

[myownface]

"Aw, cute," Sparkle said, smiling crookedly. "Gonna see all the good costumes, get all the good kids fucked up on all the bad sugars?"

He looked thoughtful for a moment.

"Maybe I should bring a bag of weird Earth junk food to the Padawans."

"Pretty much the plan, yeah," Kaidan agreed. He smiled a little, "Never got to do this before. No kids on a ship and I can't remember the last time I was dirtside for Halloween. Probably not since I was young enough to go trick or treating."

Not ..that he had.

"They'd probably love that," he said, "You can teach them the grand Earth tradition of eating themselves sick on candy corn or circus peanuts, how to stick their jaws together on Jujubes.."

[myownface]

"Candy corn? I want them to like me," Sparkle accused with a laugh. "But there are those brown toffee candies, the ones that try to yank your teeth right out? I love those."

They were cheap and he could get like a billion of them easy, even when money wasn't really a thing he had.

Kaidan made a face, "I pulled a filling out with one of those once. Haven't had one since my adult teeth grew in."

"Is Bulk Barn a thing yet? They had the maple leaf-shaped tourist candies. Those were my favorites."

[myownface]

Sparkle laughed.

"Bulk Barn is so a thing," he replied. "I used to go in there and..."

Sample a little bit of everything he could fit in his mouth.

"... You know. Shop. For candy."

Yeah. Sure, that.

He shrugged, and then finally leaned in and started laying down black polish on Kaidan's nails.

As is the right and proper thing to do in Bulk Barn!

Ahem.

"Yeah," he agreed with a lopsided smile, "Same."

No, Kaidan, not the same, you bougie little bugger.

"It wasn't where the other kids from my school went. They went to Candyland down by the mall. Didn't get bothered much."

[myownface]

"Candyland down by the mall, yeah?" Sparkle smiled crookedly. "Toronto had, like, a shitload of candy stores. Sweet Thrills, Squish Candy, The Candy Bar..."

Shit, getting homesick wasn't the aim of the game today.

"Bulk Barn is way better anyway."

Their party may have fallen through, but Hannibal had no intention of letting Sparkle have a lonely Halloween.

He stepped into the store, looked at Sparkle, and raised an eyebrow. "There's a look I've not seen for a while."
