When everyone got in, they'd find Peter eyeing the TV oddly. "Okay, this is another one I don't know if I should blame on gremlins or what. I'm pretty sure the movie here isn't the one I rented, but I tried another one and it's the same thing."

Maybe he'd left them in the car too long, and this was what happened to DVDs?

"So I guess this is what we're watching today. Keep an eye out for gremlins, just in case. It is a pretty well-known movie, anyway, and was really popular at the time, so it's a good one for the class. Just not what I'd planned on."

And eggnog, because.

And this would be Amaya, sniffing the eggnog as subtly as she could, to see if it was the right kind of eggnog.

Look, it was around this time of year she'd first gotten here, with her unexpected new business venture at Turtle & Canary, where she'd discovered that eggnog without the boozy stuff was even a thing, which...sure, there were a lot of things that confused her back then, and that had definitely been toward the top of the list.

What was even the point?

The eggnog, unfortunately, was not the good kind, as Peter had become aware not everybody drank. There was, however, a bottle of brandy next to it if someone wanted to doctor their own.

It's a classic! Sort of.

"Oh!" Amaya blinked with surprise at the screen once the movie got started. "I've actually seen this one!"

Several times, even. Thanks to someone who she was just going to quickly text after pulling out her phone to snap a picture to accompany the message, because if Diaz found out there was ~~RoboCop~~CyborgPolice going on without her and Amaya didn't tell her, she'd never forgive her for it.

And Diaz went through a lot of weapons. Amaya wasn't planning on burning that bridge anytime soon.

Rosa'd gotten the text while at the bar, where else?, but quickly made it over to the community center once she did, hoping she didn't miss too much of the beginning.

As if she hadn't already seen it a million times.

But when she got there, after snagging some refreshments, because, hey, they were there and on her way, she plopped down next to Amaya. "You're a true friend, Blackstone," she said, holding up a fist.

And Amaya was just going to grin and meet that fist with her own.

"You can thank me later, Diaz."

"So what are we doing here?" Seivarden asked. Rosa had told her to come along, so she had, a bit uncomfortable that she didn't even bother to try an question it.

"Watching one of the greatest movies ever made," Rosa explained again, because she felt it was pretty obvious. "It's got everything I like. Gratuitous violence..."

...it...sounded like she was about to launch into a list there, and yet, she didn't seem to be continuing.

Seivarden waited for a moment to see if Rosa would add to that list.

"Nothing else?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Nope," Rosa shook her head. "I was done."

"No love story, no friendship?" Seivarden guessed she knew the answer already. She shrugged and sat down on the couch, reaching for an unopened bag of chips.

"I hope it's worth not having that absinthe."

Rosa's brow furrowed, giving Seivarden a bewildered look of confusion. "You can go back to the bar and have absinthe at any time," she said. "You only get to see ~~RoboCop~~CyborgPolice for the first time once in your life."

And it was a magical, transformative experience and she was talking right through it.

"Let's watch this then," Seivarden said, sounding a bit suspicious.

She wasn't quite sober. She had had a beer and a glass of absinthe, which might be why she didn't consider that her comment a few minutes later was a bad idea.

"This is terrible."

The whole idea that anyone could not like this movie was something at Rosa found completely ridiculous.

"What are you talking about?" she asked. "This is great. Just...wait til it gets to the really good parts."

The whole movie was really good parts, but, sure, she'd allow that it had its lower points, and so she was just going to stick with the idea that maybe it would take a while for Seivarden to really appreciate it, because focusing on that was better than the creeping suspicion she was starting to feel that Seivarden might actually genuinely not enjoy this movie, and that..

...that would be a problem.

Seivarden opened her bag of chips (she was definitely not sharing) and pulled out a handful.

"When do we get to the good parts?" she asked, a little suspicious.

It. Was. All good parts.

Rosa was having a few regrets about this now, yes. She should have just said there was an emergency, someone was murdered, she had to go check it out, and then she could enjoy the movie in peace.

But noooooo.

"Probably as soon as you shut up and stop talking through the whole thing."

"But nothing is happening," Seivarden protested. "It's just violence. Not that I mind that, but where's the story?"

Rosa slowly turned her head and stared at Seivarden for a second before shrugging, lifting her hands like they were useless. "That's...exactly what I said," she noted, turning the other way to implore Blackstone to jump in and support her on that one, but Blackstone just shook her head, lifted her own hands in surrender, and was trying to subtly scoot away.

She'd deal with that later.

"There's story!" Rosa protested instead, turning back to Seivarden. "Dude totally gets to come back to life as a cybernetic cop and kick ass all over the place! And the whole thing with his memories coming back, that's story, and totally getting revenge on the corrupt dude who's trying to mess everything up!"

"So they mess with his body so he's no longer human?"

Seivarden should really shut up.

"Fine, maybe that's a story, but it just reminds me how useless medical treatments are here."

"Oh my god." Rosa could not roll her eyes hard enough. "He still has a human brain; they didn't mess with his body, they made it better, since he probably wasn't going to get much use out of it anymore after that gang got finished him. The whole point by the end--"

But she bit off the rant, because she realized that now she was talking through the movie and missed one of her favorite bits of violence because of it, and she sucked in a sharp breath.

"Maybe if you just shut up and just watched it..."

"I'm just saying a medic who can't grow back limbs is pretty useless, and you can't put someone together like that without messing with their brain."

She made a gesture with her hand. "Fine. I'll watch it."

Reluctantly.

Jesus, did she not know how movies worked? They didn't have to make sense! They just had to be awesome, and this one in particular was awesome in a neat one hour and forty-three minutes package, and how could she possibly not just sit back and enjoy it?

And that tone. Rosa knew that tone.

"No one's forcing you to," she pointed out in a murmur.

Seivarden didn't reply, just crossed her arms. The alcohol was wearing off a little, and she just didn't want to argue.

"I said I'll watch it."

Mostly because she wanted to follow Rosa home afterwards.

Yeah, good luck with that one.

"Good," she said, tersely, not believe her for a second.

And then felt extra irritated that even narrowing her focus in on the movie didn't help alleviate the initial irritation hardly at all. Which should be impossible with this movie, but, there they were.

Seivarden kept silent. She was going to stay silent until someone said something to her, gaze fixed on the screen, reaching for a soda to wash down the crisps.

Great.

Just...great.

Stupid, stubborn, contrary piece of--

The thought did occur to Rosa that she could just leave, it wasn't like she hadn't seen the movie a million times before, but screw that. It was her favorite cop movie, Blackstone had sent the invitation to her, it was only her own damn fault that she was stupid enough to think it was a good idea to bring a wet mop with her.

Ugh. This was quite possibly one of the worst things that could ever happen while watching ~~RoboCop~~ CyborgPolice, and she didn't think it was possible for anything bad to happen when watching ~~RoboCop~~ CyborgPolice.

She just kept holding her breath through all the excessively violent deaths (of which there were many), just waiting for Seivarden to say one more word about any of them...

Seivarden kept her mouth shut during the rest of the movie, and didn't even look at Rosa.

She considered leaving too, it wasn't like she still expected to spend the night at Rosa's place, but...

No, she was going to watch the ending of this terrible movie, even if she wasn't sure why.

Honestly, Rosa was...a little impressed that Seivarden actually had shut up through the duration of the movie. She was definitely surprised...until she remembered that this was basically just another stubborn butting of immovable heads again, and then it seemed less impressive and right back to obnoxious again.

And just the sheer fact alone that the credits were rolling and she hadn't even enjoyed herself was just...just...

She didn't think she could get up fast enough, turning very clearly away from Seivarden and toward Amaya with a nod. "Thanks for the invite, Blackstone," she said, and took off for the door with as deliberately as normal a pace as she could manage.

Now Seivarden turned her head. She should stay, of course, let Rosa leave before she headed back home herself.

So she didn't. She got up and followed Rosa, because if anything needed to be said...

Nothing needed to be said, but she was still following Rosa.

Which was...fine, whatever, they both needed to exit through the doors, didn't they? And then go their separate ways, and thank god they lived in different buildings, but even the thought of getting to the doors was enough to make Rosa want to just change course for the restroom and sneak out the window if she had to.

It wouldn't have been the first time she'd done something like that just to avoid awkwardly keeping step with someone before.

But it'd be fine. Out the door, she could turn and head down Loon, Seivarden could easily get to her apartment by going the other way down Chimera. Perfect. So long. Screw you and somehow managing to ruin a perfect movie.

So that was her plan, and that's what she did, leaving the community center and turning toward Loon Drive and taking advantage of her naturally long stride while huddling into her jacket against the brisk cold against the heat of her simmering anger.

"Hey," Seivarden called, stopping as they were supposed to walk in different directions. "It's... I mean... it's just a movie."

"Yup," Rosa called back, with no intention of stopping, "and you're just an asshole."

Just a movie. She definitely didn't think she could handle dealing with anyone who thought that the greatest cop film of all time was just a movie right now.

Somehow she felt Rosa meant that 'asshole' a little more seriously than usual.

"Fine. Fucking uncivilised..." she trailed off, turned around and headed in her direction, muttering Radchaai curses under her breath.

"Have you?" Peter asked. "You're ahead of the class then."

"I suppose I am!" Amaya was just a little amused and oddly proud of that fact. "It's a favorite of a friend, I had to let her know." She gave her phone a little wave. "See if she wants to join in. She's seen it probably a million times, but that's never stopped her before."

He's here!

And I just remembered this is the first thing I ever saw Miguel Ferrer in, and dang it. RIP.
