Around the Island [Saturday]

Despite people being out destroying snow monsters for two days, now, there didn't seem to be a decrease in how many of them were roaming the island. In fact, there were even more now, swarming near the community center and the gates of the school and intent on killing everyone there.

Or at least giving them concussions.

So maybe Beau’s lips were starting to turn a little blue from being out in the cold so much, but well . . . it was her favorite color anyway.

Besides, there wasn’t anywhere else she’d rather be right now than throwing down with half a dozen snow monsters at a time, reveling in the rush of adrenaline, the rhythm and flow of footwork and dodges and strikes, every crunching blow of her staff against their frozen bodies, even the way the coarse crystals from the melted and reformed creatures would skin her knuckles and make them bleed. A couple of locks of hair had come loose from her topknot and were dangling in her eyes, she appeared to have a split lip, and she was grinning, her eyes alight and her expression happier than anyone here so far had ever seen her.

She was having the time of her fucking life, and it showed.

Kaidan and Hernando were heading toward the Community Center, hauling an orange plastic sled with insulated beverage dispensers, thermoses and mugs.

Because Hernando's priorities were a little out of whack, even if his heart was in the right place.

Kaidan was pulling sentry duty, keeping the snow monsters from getting too close.
