"No," Kanan said, squinting at the dish in front of him. "No, I think you're going to have to explain this one to me."

The cook looked anxious for a few moments, and then just kind of shoved the dish toward Kanan.

"It's one of the specials for the day."

"... Fine."

He wasn't paid enough to police these idiots all the time.

Eventually, Summer's complaining stomach grew to be more convincing that a comfy cat, but it was definitely a bit further into the afternoon when Summer showed up at the diner. "Sorry," she said as she slid into her usual spot at the counter, "there was a cat."

And, really, that should explain everything.

Except maybe the specials board.

"Y'know," she said, "sometimes I start to regret my whole..." She waved her hand vaguely, "insistence-on-pancakes-for-Sunday shtick."

Especially since she was actually kind of curious.

"I'd guess the cook is running out of ideas, but I'm pretty sure if all else fails he'll just blindfold himself and point at random at something in the freezer," Kanan noted, smiling crookedly.

And then pausing.

"You have a cat?"

That was new.

"No," Summer corrected, "a cat had me.

"At the shelter," she added after a moment of realizing that might need a bit more explanation, especially considering her track record with things. "I stopped in for a bit to take care of some things and then, boom." She gestured to her lap. "Cat. Just there. She looked comfy, so I didn't really want to disturb her."

She also had the vague sense that something bad might happen if she did.

"And, you know, I'm going to go ahead and run with the theme and say that's the reason I actually kind of want to try those trout pancakes. Because of cats."

"Oooookay," Kanan replied, squinting one eye a little as he processed... all of that. "So, you were at the shelter, and you got catted."

A pause.

"With all the experience that comes from having been a cat once, I'm pretty sure that means you have a cat now. At least while you're at the shelter."

Another pause.

"I have no idea what kind of milkshake goes with trout."

The first thing to pop into Summer's head was mackerel. And that was followed swiftly by tartar sauce, and then she threw up in her mouth a little, and she, of the flies-in-ice-cream and human-flesh, could not even bring herself to say either of them.

"On second thought," she said, "maybe I'm feeling more blueberries in my pancakes rather than fish after all. With a strawberry milkshake. I mean, you know, classic."

But not enough to ever drive the words tartar sauce milkshake from her brain, unfortunately.

"And I just got rid of a dog," Summer pointed out, in an effort to distance herself from that culinary horror, although she was only managing to bring herself back to it as her brain started to throw jello into the mix. "I'm not going to then turn around and pick up a cat. But if it's just at the shelter, that's fine."

Kanan was biting the inside of his cheek, biting back the urge to laugh at that reaction. He of the occasional 'eh, it was probably food at some point' camp of eating wasn't exactly as sympathetic as perhaps he could be.

He'd try a tartar sauce milkshake. At least once. He'd probably regret it, or else the pickle bits would just jam up the straw and he wouldn't get very far. But he'd try it.

"Blueberries and strawberries," he echoed dutifully, clearly amused. "Good, solid choice. And you passed the dog off, did you? Have that little bit of peace of mind back, and all?"

Clearly, the solution to that was one of those fat bubble tea straws, and it was thinking like that which lead Summer into her current state of entrepreneurial affairs.

"If anything," she reasoned with a blithe shrug of her shoulder, "I'm just delegating. Two businesses, a class, and someone else's pet is a lot for a single plate, and that kid," Summer, he was a year younger than you, "was stoked about it, too. Like it was a second Christmas. She'll be in good hands, and that's one less distraction for me."

"Makes sense enough," Kanan replied with a nod, placing the order for a fish-free meal in with the kitchen before turning back to her with a grin and his arms crossed over his chest. "So, how's the rest of it going? Make any interesting connections through the T&C lately?"

"Nothing too exciting," Summer admitted with a little bit of a shrug. "Mostly just recalibrating after the holidays, but I did get an interesting gift," yeah, she had a few pretty narrowed-down ideas for who had gotten her name to give her a freaking holobook encyclopedia of a very specific and increasingly familiar galaxy, "for the holiday gift exchange that should be good for some inspiration. Oh! But I did have my first shoplifter."

That she knew about.

And, boy, did she know about it, too.

"Huh. What kind of gift?" Genuine curiosity, there, at least. Sorry, Summer. Wasn't this guy.

Kanan was bad at holidays.

"... But a shoplifter, huh? How did that go?"

And really, how uncommon was that around here?

Kitty came in and set Lexi's carrier down on the counter before actually looking at the menu and saying, "Was this the wrong day to come in?"

Which was helpful, really! Because now it was even more laser-focused narrowed-in, and she smirked a little.

BDG didn't really seem the educational-gift type, anyway.

"A holographic encyclopedia of your galaxy," she informed him. "So, clearly, someone who both knows my interests well and thinks herself helpful."

Which it was. Extremely. She hadn't even gotten through probably a little bit of it yet, and she'd still learned so much.

"As for the shoplifter....well...she pretty much did it literally under my nose, like, while I was watching her. Okay, technically when I wasn't watching her; she moved anytime I looked away, then froze when I looked back. But she kept going for it, and I mostly just let her get away with it because it was just so....fascinating. And I think she genuinely believes that I had no idea. So it'll be interesting to see if she tries it again or I get a chance to mention it to her if we cross paths again."

"No such thing," Kanan said, immediately honing in to give a dumb little grin to Lexi. "Order whatever you like, and I'll make sure the cook makes it, smoked fish free."

A pause.

"Unless for some reason you want smoked fish pancakes."

It took all types, right?

"Noooo. No no no," she said, shaking her head, emphatically. "I'll just stick with the Kitty. Vegetarian."

Not a thing you wanted to specify about your pancakes!

"Hey, that is useful," Kanan noted with a grin. "Learn anything good? Have you even made it past aurek yet?"

A. Have you made it past A?

"And... I almost want to meet that shoplifter. Is it bad I kind of feel sorry I don't work in a place that's easily shoplifted from?"

Dine-and-dash situations were somewhat different.

"Solid choice," Kanan agreed, chuckling a little. "One Kitty, no fish. Anything to drink? Or for Lexi, here?"

A pause.

"Or is she still too young for things?"

How did babies go? Maybe he ought to get a book or something.

"Oh, I've been skipping around a lot," Summer admitted. "It's like being sucked into a Wikipedia hole. You start reading about one thing, which leads you to another, and then another, until, the next thing you know, it's two o'clock in the morning and you're deep in the migratory patterns and mating cycles of fambaas. But, boy, am I glad I read up on the Mon Calamari before getting the chance to eat at a seafood restaurant out there."

Things could have gotten awkward.

"And you never know," she offered, "maybe the thief'll be in the market for some salt shakers and cutlery soon. Or you could pick up a few shifts in the hopes that the fresh meat will lure her in. We could roll out a nice Shoplifters Come In! red carpet, pull out all the stops..."

A little game of...cat and mouse, perhaps, hmm?

"I'm not entirely sure if you just offered me a job or not," Kanan admitted with a laugh. "You know, I've done bartending, delivery boy, machine repair, smuggling, and explosives hauling, but 'shop clerk' isn't even on my resume? I'm not sure I'm qualified."

... He was distinctly over-qualified.

"She's too young for things so she's just gonna have to be jealous," Kitty said, reaching into the carrier to give her a little tickle. "I'll have a vanilla milkshake and just so much water for all that sugar."

"See, you've got this 'dealing with sugar' thing all figured out," Kanan said easily, getting her a glass of water first before sending the milkshake order to the kitchen.

He could make it himself, but he wanted to make stupid faces at the baby. Don't judge him.

"Still a work in progress, for me."

He'd had such a grenadine hangover on Tuesday morning.

"Or you could just say no thanks," Summer snorted, grinning faintly. "You don't have to say yes to every job you're offered, BDG."

Because, apparently, he did, and didn't even mention all of them, as indicated by the emphasis.

She shrugged, though, rolling her eyes. "I'm just trying make it easier for your shoplifter-catching dreams to come true, that's all."

"Hey, it takes money to fund the stupid things we do back home," Kanan replied easily. "Ships take upkeep, blasters take power packs, armor..."

He paused.

"Armor is actually just surprisingly easy to steal off of Stormtroopers..."

"They're probably just eager to get rid of it," Summer mused. "I'd hardly call that get up even remotely fashionable."

Because, yes, Summer, looking good was paramount when it came to armor.

"Have you ever tried to steal the armor off of any of the troopers here?" she wondered.

She couldn't think of a reason why anyone would, but it was interesting to think about, at least.

There would be no judging. Being there to have faces made at them was what babies were for.

"You've gotta pace yourself, and remember your organs haven't done anything to hurt you," Kitty advises.

"What, at the station?" Hello, Summer. You'd just meandered into interesting territory where Kanan and his hang-ups about clones were concerned. "No. Their armor is better than standard-issue Imperial Stormtrooper armor these days, but... No."

And the faintest clench of his jaw as he reached to collect her pancakes and milkshake from the kitchen.

"I try to steer as clear of them as I possibly can. It's better that way."
