Luke's, Sunday

Once upon a time, the prospect of working in a diner with a cook that insisted on serving pancakes every Sunday just to mess with him would have made Kanan squint and wonder how the hell he'd wound up in that particular situation.

Today, he just came in to work, looked at the specials board, shrugged, and ordered one serving of each out of curiosity. Because why the hell not? Happy Sunday and all that.

The cook didn't trust it.

Welcome to Luke's!
Today's Specials:
Bacon and Corn Griddle Cakes
Lamb Tikka with Curried Cauliflower Pancakes
Sweet Pizza Pancakes

Kanan had no regrets. Even if the cook insisted that he could eat that pizza pancake without picking the pineapple off and eating it all first.

"Well," Summer declared, as she came into the diner a bit later than usual again and plopped down onto her stool with an air of defeat, "you were right. I have a cat."

She heaved a big, suffering sigh before launching into, "She's smart and she's beautiful and her name is Pancakes and I love her and I would die for her and, here," Summer's phone went sliding across the counter, "I already took a million pictures, and just look at that face, and you tell me how you'd have been able to say no to that face."

Summer had Cat on the brain right now and she always got pancakes, so it sort of went without asking, so she just nodded along and explained.

"Because her fur is, like, the exact color of a perfectly cooked pancake," obviously, "but Kanan," and she used his name to convey the seriousness of the situation here, "this is bad. This is a slippery slope. I am a divorced woman," well, she never technically divorced Hemorrhage, she just sort of...left, but one could also argue, considering they were in a anarchic apocalypse where the only laws were those enforced by bloodshed and violence, were they ever really actually married in the first place?, "living alone, getting her first cat. I need you to promise me that the moment I even think about getting a third, you will step in with an intervention."

She was only eighteen! That was way too early to become a crazy cat lady! This was all happening so fast!

"Absolutly not," said Summer, shaking her head with firm determination. "No exceptions. We need to draw a firm, hard line on this issue that cannot budge. Besides, taking two cats and a dog with me into space just sounds like a nightmare."

Which, of course, made her realize that this did not account for what other kinds of pets she might find while she was out there, but....that was maybe a bridge they could cross when they reached it.
somethingwithturquoise: (so high right now)

"Now, see," Summer said, "I can shake a dog. I just did, with Girl, and all parties involved are better off because of it. But Stance...now, that's different. Stance isn't just any dog, BDG. Stance is only the greatest dog to ever exist. So, you know, that's no fault of your own."
somethingwithturquoise: (just so happy right now)

"And you know what?" said Summer. "I don't think I'd want to meet the person who could lookin into those big stupid eyes and still say no. Because that person would have to be a stone cold bee-yoch."
somethingwithturquoise: (happy chatting)

"Weeeelllll," said Summer, looking particularly thoughtful now as he asked, "I know Fridays are usually good for me, but you've got your warehouse stuff. But Saturdays are always good, too, I mean, unless something happens. Around here, scheduling something on a Saturday's pretty risky business and it has been pretty quiet lately..."

Ahem.

"Maaaaybe Tuesday? I mean, not much happens on Tuesday, except you taking one more step closer to your inevitable sugar-induced coma."

Yeah, and he was probably going to need it, too, if they wound up...chatting like they said they would.

"Drinks are on me, then, when we get back," Summer offered. "I can do early, definitely. And as far as where, I was thinking about that a little bit, too. You really got me hooked on the nebula idea, something good and scenic. What do you think about the Archeon Nebula? The encyclopedia said that's where stars were born."

And that was just the sort of thing to make her go ooooh.

"That, or Vulpinus. That looked like it was the furthest one out."

Which could be cool in a different way.

Hey, Summer would be more than happy to take a faintly bemused reaction to something she suggested that the usual uncomfortable awkwardness she usually stumbled onto, and she grinned, then nodded.

"Let's do that, then," she said. "I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunity for other ones later, too."

Radio shift done, Jack went to Luke's because this was quickly becoming a habit. Do the radio then go give Kanan crap then go home and work on materials for her class. It was a good way to spend a Sunday since she had to be up so early.

Plopped down on a seat at the counter and squinted up at the menu. "Am I going to make the cook cry when I order regular pancakes with bacon stacked between 'em?" Jack asked, "Because that and coffee."

A beat.

"Please. Coffee now though."

"Goes too fucking early to deal with drunk-ass squirrels is how it goes," Jack grumbled more or less good-naturedly. "I'm stealing your dog."

A beat.

"At some point. To go running with."

Not so much with the stealing, really.

Jack made grabby hands toward him. "I'm down."

She put the hands to better use cupping her coffee and taking a drink. "Maybe it'll convince the goddamn masochist that I don't need to join him in his pre-dawn hellish running hobby. When the fuck did he turn into a morning person and what drugs do I gotta get my hands on to turn him back into the night owl he used to be? Goddamn."

Jack scowled and bonked her head lightly on the counter. "Two, Kanan. Two of my students got bit by one of the fucking things. By catching it."

When she looked up, she added, "Any of those little fuckers bites me, that little fucker's gonna die. Probably not even on purpose. Shit's inside me and I wouldn't drink that blood." Then a muttered, "It is cold as hell, and dark, and windy, and damp. It's gross."

"Catching it," she confirmed from behind her mug, "On purpose. I'm assigning so much homework tomorrow the little shits won't have time to piss much less go looking for the little green fuckers."

She probably wouldn't.
