Éponine, it might be pointed out, had most decidedly not been wearing a jaunty little straw hat when she left home to come to work this morning. She'd had a perfectly sensible warm knit cap on, only to find it replaced all of a sudden when she stepped through the post office door.

This was all very well and good so long as she stayed indoors, but she'd have to go out later to make deliveries, of course, and then it simply wouldn't do, would it, now? Luckily there appeared to be an entire pile of hats that had just materialized from nowhere in the storage room, as she found out when she went to restock the supply of padded envelopes.

Though as if to add insult to injury, it turned out that today's deliveries included several dozen of what appeared to be wrapped hat boxes.

"Ah," she said to the island at large, peering dubiously up toward the ceiling, "I suppose you're having a bit of a laugh today, are you? All right, then."

Really, there was a point at which all you could do was just take the island's whims in stride.
