Atlas Gym: Saturday evening

Kaidan had agreed to start self-defense lessons for two of his friends. They'd talked about it for months but recent events had galvanized it so here he was at the gym, setting up one of the side rooms with a double layer of floor mats and some padded gloves and other assorted things.

He'd ~~handwaved~~ told both men to wear cups or other groin protection. He didn't think they'd need it tonight but they should get used to moving in it at the very least. Eventually they'd be pairing off against one another and they'd need it.

For now, what he needed was padding. Not for taking falls - they wouldn't be doing any of that for awhile due to Hernando's head injury - but as a safe but unstable footing for them to learn spacial relations on.

One of the most effective martial arts in the world.. and it all started with a funky game of 'tag'.

No world ending.

Okay. Okay. This would be good. Sparkle was still kind of keyed up after New York. And you'd think maybe he'd stop being keyed up two weeks later, but, look, it had fucking sucked and he still didn't know if, like, he'd left seriously injured punks or corpses behind, and maybe a couple of hours of physical activity would help keep his mind off of things for a bit.

There had to be better ways to deal with that sort of thing than 'go for the fucking eyes,' anyway.

"Okay, this is good. It's gonna be good."

Hernando showed up shortly after Sparkle did. Kaidan was just going to have to wait for a moment while he walked over and quite thoroughly kissed his boyfriend hello. He could see Sparkle was twitchy. "Hi," he murmured when they surfaced.

"Hiiii," Sparkle murmured back, smiling a little. See? That did wonders for his mood right there already. "How are you doing, babe?"

"A little nervous," Hernando admitted, "I am not certain what to expect. Kaidan said it would not shake my head around and there would be no falling work today, but other than that?" Palm shrug. He searched Sparkle's face. "How are you doing, baby?"

"Better?" A beat. "Mostly better. It's good to see you up and about and only kinda doing a raccoon impression. I've been..."

Doubling down on his bullshit?

"Been talking to Dr. Lecter about learning some first aid, actually."

And learning the opposite of first aid.

"If you have your eyeliner in your bag I could correct the 'kinda'," Hernando teased him. He was a little bit worried about all the pauses in Sparkle's answer. "First aid is a useful thing to know. I had to learn first responder training and basic first aid for my professorship. The college required it of all faculty." He smiled ruefully, "You see how much good it did me when I was injured." None. It had done him no good at all. He hadn't even been able to tell Sparkle what to do.

He nuzzled his no longer bleeding at a touch nose against Sparkle's. "I am glad you are doing better even for 'mostly'."

"I mean, first responder stuff is for when other people get hurt," Sparkle pointed out. "What are you supposed to do when someone rattles your own brains? Kinda limited options, there. But hey, we'll both have it before too long, so that's one less thing to worry about."

Step in the right direction, right? Sparkle nuzzled right back.

"Got a tattoo the other day?"

There, that was an offering. A good thing, probably?

Miguel wandered into the gym, did his workout, then stopped to watch. Huh.

"Did you?" Hernando murmured, "Where? What did you get a tattoo of?" He smiled a little, "I would not challenge me to find it on my own, baby. It would embarrass Kaidan."

And probably lead to the kind of wrestling around that had nothing whatsoever to do with self-defense.

Sparkle laughed a little at that, shaking his head.

"Could be fun, but you'd find it pretty fast, I think. It isn't small."

He reached up to tug at the neck of his t-shirt, enough to expose the new ink, or at least enough to identify it as a snarling panther face. Because... it had fit at the time.

Hernando reached out to move the neck of the shirt a little more out of his way. He smiled when he saw the design and then he leaned in for another kiss. Humming his approval against Sparkle's mouth and when the kiss broke, murmuring a very quiet, "My panther has a panther."

That earned a little smile, and Sparkle ducked his head a bit.

"Look, look, I got a kitty," he murmured, grinning. "This one's a lot bigger than the one that used to live on my shoulder, but he's still a good kitty."

God, he missed that stupid clingy cat, though.

Hernando didn't get the reference and asked, "Is that what the other tattoo was? That was there before?" He smiled back, "Now you shall have a kitty with you wherever you go."

Big surprise, Beau spent a lot of time at the gym. Like today, for example, but when she saw what was going on . . .

"FIGHT CLUB!" she bellowed, and bounded over to watch. And heckle, more than likely, but the way she kept bouncing on her toes with her fists clenched and an intensely absorbed look on her face she might just try and throw herself in there to hit things any second.

"Oh! No, I had a cat, back in school," Sparkle explained. "His name was Velcro and he was totally a shoulder cat. Good little buddy. Black cat, too."

A pause.

"Way less fierce than this one, though."

"Oh yes, you've mentioned Velcro before," Hernando nodded, "I only didn't get the shoulder reference."

Hernando's thumb ran over the skin near the tattoo. "I like how fierce this one is. It suits you."

See Sparkle. See Sparkle give a little smile at that, ducking his head a little.

"I'm kind of hoping one of these days, I'll suit it. But I'll take that, too."

Hernando leaned in and kissed him again. "You already do," he said when he let his boyfriend have, you know, oxygen.

"Fierce panther, roar?" Sparkle grinned a little. "Let's see if we can hone that a little more, then."

Instead of... incoherent screeching and going for the eyes. Effective as that had been.

"There is nothing wrong with being a little more fierce," Hernando said, kissing him briefly.

He looked over at Kaidan and raised his brows, "You can stop rolling your eyes at us and begin, Kaidan."
