Kanan walked in for his shift today, and was immediately regarded with suspicion by the busboy, who was sitting behind the counter, in his spot.

The busboy squinted. Kanan squinted back.

"We thought Eliot finally fired you," the busboy supplied.

"... Why the hell would he fire me?"

A shrug was the busboy's only answer.

Today's Specials:
Taco Soup
Grilled Chili Lime Chicken Fajita Salad
Waffles

Apparently, the pancake thing really was just to annoy Kanan. The cook hadn't planned for him to be in today.

"Wait a minute, finally?"

But...but...pancakes!

So that specials board was definitely earning a glare from Summer, who figured that, by now, if there weren't pancakes up and there were actually waffles, they had to be doing it on purpose and she felt she could now make a case that someone back there might actually enjoy being yelled at by her...and she did not want to go there.

She had other things on her mind first, though, and something in her hand, which, on closer inspection, was clearly a cupcake, with its frosting spiked and done up to resemble a hedgehog. Which was super cute, so long as you didn't think too much about the fact that they were for a hedgehog, in which case it just started to get a little weird.

"Full disclosure," she said, setting the cupcake down on the counter and sliding it forward for him, "I have good reason to believe this was made by a rat wearing a chef's hat."

But, considering it was BDG, she did not exactly see this being an issue.

Really, Kanan was reasonably certain he'd worked for a rat wearing a chef's hat at some point over the past decade anyway. Probably.

"Do you get many rats wearing chef's hats around here?"

He picked up the cupcake to study it, thoughtfully.

It was cute, he had to give it that.

"Not usually," Summer admitted, getting comfortable at her usual seat, "but most of the animals at the shelter have them today. For Carl's going-away party."

Jack went to see if Kanan was back from wherever the radio notes had most definitely not said he'd gone. She saw him through the window at Luke's, waved, and went on in.

Where she stopped and read the Specials board, resulting in an immediate and loud demand for information, "What the fuck? It's Sunday, where are the goddamn pancakes? What the shit are you fuckers even doing back there? Is this an invasion of some sort? Did something come along in the night and steal your goddamn brains? It's. Sunday. There. Should. Be. Pancakes."

You can't just change a menu on people like that, you dicks. Some people needed their routine.

"Kanan, you can make pancakes, right? So if I drag the cook outside and let my fist have a few words with him, I can come back to a right and proper breakfast, yeah?" She wouldn't, she was just that annoyed as she parked herself on the diner seat and grouched, "Coffee first, hitting next, if he doesn't get with the makin' of the damn pancakes."

"Is... Carl the vet?"

Oh, Kanan.

How long had you lived here?

"Coffee first," Kanan laughed, reaching for the biggest mug they had and topping that bad boy up for her. "And they'll still do pancakes, apparnetly they got it in their heads that I wasnt' going to be here today, for some reason."

Because you'd missed a few weeks there, Kanan.

"That's what happens when you skive off work for like a month, ickle," Jack pointed out helpfully, "I had to get my coffee at the Perk and offend the baristas by ordering it plain and black and not letting them mess with it."

It hadn't been a month. Jack was just disgruntled at both her favorite Jedi for not being where they should be when they should be there because the entire multiverse should pivot on her.

"I'll remember that for next time," Kanan laughed a bit. "If I have a job elsewhere on a Sunday, I'll either make sure to have coffee delivered to your door, or I'll just drag you along. How does that sound?"

Jack scowled at him - fondly? Can scowls be fond? - and said, "Better drag me along. It's not like I come here for the coffee anyway." A beat. "Or the pancakes."

Because she could see that dig coming a mile away.

"You'll have a great time," Kanan mused. "Yesterday the portals kriffed up and Sabine and I wound up in a magical forest being taunted by a talking monkey."

Thanks, multiverse.

Jack's eyebrows rose, "Wait, you went on a portal jaunt and didn't bring me?"

Ickle. Really.

"I was going out to buy fuel," Kanan complained. "It's a routine run, it was supposed to dump us off near Lothal! It's like getting groceries!"

"On another planet in another system that's not entirely populated by humans!" Jack pointed out, aggrieved.

"Anyway. Whatever. I don't care. Tell me about the fucking monkey."

"The monkey. In the tree. That was shaped like hearts. Not the organ, the stupid Valentine shape. That spent a good twenty minutes laughing at me."

And here is where he fell silent, mildly pained, "While I tried to get my damn ship out of the tree."

Summer...realized just then that she wasn't entire sure she knew what the vet's name actually was. Maybe it was Carl. But that didn't seem important right now.

"No," she said, turning to her phone for a moment to pull up a picture and then turning it over to him, "this is Carl."

He had a little suitcase, BDG! And a HAT!!

"You crashed the ship into a Valentine heart tree?" Jack sipped her coffee and shot him an amused look over the rim. "Buddy. And it took you 20 minutes to lift the ship out of the tree?"

She asked solicitously, "You feelin' alright?"

"... Carl is so tiny."

This was a very astute observation on Kanan's behalf.

"Is Carl related to the squirrels...?"

Kanan snorted and rolled his eyes at that.

"It would've come out of the tree faster if the monkey hadn't kept helping."

Playful Heart meant well. But he was not a helpful monkey.

Jack smirked at him. "Be fair, Kanan. The monkey was there first. If it was your tree someone crashed a ship into, you'd try to help get it out of there too."

Summer giggled a little, because it was kind of hard not to, when discussing Carl. "He is so tiny," she agreed. "And he's way better than the squirrels. He's a hedgehog. They...might be related to squirrels? But I don't know. I don't think so, but, I mean, I'm not exactly a hedgehogologist over here."

"Yes," Kanan sighed. "But maybe not by dropping the damn thing a meter or two at a time using vines as supports for it."

IT WAS NOT A LIGHT SHIP.

"Didn't someone just tell me he was capable of hefting an entire mountain?" Jack wondered aloud, "I'm pretty sure someone just told me that so I'm a little curious why he didn't jump down and lift the ship out of the tree before the monkey could get involved."

Kanan. Buddy.

"He looks like he means business."

A pause.

"Not just because of the little hat and suitcase." He glanced down at the cupcake. "Well, desserts came out of it."

"That was the attempt," Kanan replied. "And then the lion showed up."

This just kept getting better.

"You got a monkey and a lion? Jealous," Jack noted, still smirking at him.
