Kanan walked in for his shift today, and was immediately regarded with suspicion by the busboy, who was sitting behind the counter, in his spot.

The busboy squinted. Kanan squinted back.

"We thought Eliot finally fired you," the busboy supplied.

"... Why the hell would he fire me?"

A shrug was the busboy's only answer.

Apparently, the pancake thing really was just to annoy Kanan. The cook hadn't planned for him to be in today.

"Wait a minute, finally?"

"Didn't someone just tell me he was capable of hefting an entire mountain?" Jack wondered aloud, "I'm pretty sure someone just told me that so I'm a little curious why he didn't jump down and lift the ship out of the tree before the monkey could get involved."

Kanan. Buddy.

"That was the attempt," Kanan replied. "And then the lion showed up."

This just kept getting better.

"You got a monkey and a lion? Jealous," Jack noted, still smirking at him.

"And apparently they were both related to bears, somehow."

A beat.

"Earth animals make no sense."

Just saying this again.

[biotic_psychotic]

"Adoption probably," Jack said since she knew that the only other way they were related was in the 'mammal' classification.

"I got a starfish," she offered since maybe marine life from Earth was less weird.

Though now she thought about it, she wasn't sure it was from Earth. Who the hell even knew where Fjord's sword went in between times.

Kanan blinked.

"You got a what?"

[biotic_psychotic]

"Starfish," Jack said. Rummaged her phone out and pulled up a picture of Kraken. "Tiny one. It came off a sword and I kept him. It's in a bowl of sea water at home."

Kanan squinted at the picture, and then broke into a little grin.

"Okay, that's cute," he decided. "And you got it... off of a sword?"

That was... odd.

[biotic_psychotic]

"The sword was covered in salt water and barnacles at the time," Jack said - dryly, because irony. "Don't ask. It was weird and yet there was this little starfish, and Caritas has fishbowls and.. yeah. It was a thing and now I have a Kraken."

"A... kraken," Kanan echoed. "Which is the kind of... starfish?"

No, Kanan.

Look, he was still bad at Earth. But he was trying, here.

[biotic_psychotic]

"It's name, ickle," Jack said patiently, "It's name is Kraken."

[uncertain_dume]

"Oh." A pause. "Okay, and what's a kraken otherwise?"

[biotic_psychotic]

"Depending what you read or watch? Either a giant octopus monster or a giant evil weed monster but in both cases: big giant badasses of the sea," Jack answered.

Kraken was so smol, Kanan. So very very smol.

Kanan just laughed, considering the photo for a moment.

"Well, it's always good to have goals," he decided.

[biotic_psychotic]

Jack grinned at him. "I didn't name it. I said it was one and Fjord made it all a proper pronoun with a capital Kraken and so.. now it has a name. On this island, I can't guarantee it won't grow up to be a giant badass sea monster so.."

She'd be so proud if it did. It could live in the lake with the giant squid.

"True enough," Kanan chuckled. "So hopefully, when Kraken here is larger than the island itself, it'll remember who took it in when it was content to live on a sword."

For some weird reason.

[biotic_psychotic]

"Not so sure it would've been content for long," Jack pointed out, "It's a sea creature that's used to being underwater and that sword won't be always. So now it has a home in a fishbowl where it's safe and a name."

[uncertain_dume]

"And where it won't find itself being swung around at things that warrant having a sword pulled on them."

It was such a tiny little star... fish thing.

[biotic_psychotic]

"Exactly. When it's a little bigger, I'll see if I can find out what kind of starfish it is and if it lives on this planet somewhere. If it does, I can put it back where it belongs," Jack said, drinking her coffee. "If not, then I have a pet for as long as it lives."

So smol.

Hopefully it wasn't one of the species of starfish currently having a rough go of it out there. And hey, any time Jack needed new water for the bowl, at least it wasn't terribly hard to find, right?

"There are worse ways to end up with pets," Kanan mused. "Stance was a complete surprise to me, too, but it isn't like I can just shove him somewhere and walk away, either."

For starters, he would miss the good good boy. And beyond that, Kanan was never going back to that neon-hued nightmare world if he could avoid it.

"For starters, I'd murder you," Jack said fondly, "Because if you could shove that adorable precious pupper somewhere and walk away, I'd know you'd been taken over by something or someone else."

If it was a species of starfish having a rough go, Kraken could just live in a bowl and be spoilt his whole life through.

"He's not a bad pet to have. Cheap to feed, he eats pests."

A beat.

"Sea pests. Not people pests. Though damn, wouldn't that be useful too."

Kanan paused for a very short moment, a kind of silly expression crossing his face before he saw fit to explain.

"You say that, but I still just pictured Seivarden with a starfish hugging her nose."

[biotic_psychotic]

She coughed her coffee back into her cup. "Holy fuck!" Jack laughed, scrabbling a hand for a napkin to wipe her face off with. "Kanan! Why would you do that to my poor helpless little Kraken?! Be nice to my starfish, man, I just got it!"

Though now she had the mental image, she had herself a good long snicker. She knew how starfish ate. She'd looked it up. It was not something she felt like disclosing to Kanan.

Even if it did make the mental picture that much more funny.

Kanan just grinned and shoved the napkin dispenser Jack's way.

"Kraken is a fierce tiny sea monster, I'm sure it can handle even the most distasteful of pests."

Kanan, be nice.

"Yeah but then I'd have to clean recycled Seivarden out of the bowl," Jack complained, "Not cool, ickle, not cool."
