The cook looked at Kanan like he'd lost his mind.

"What pancake bar?"

"Don't pull that, there was a pancake bar just last week."

"I don't know what you're talking about. What's a pancake?"

"... If you're about to pull out wa--"

"Sundays are waffle days."

"Just wait until Summer finds out you said that."

Kanan stared at the cook, stone-faced. The cook stared back, attempting to maintain the same.

...

"I'll start setting up the pancake bar."

"Good man."

Luckily for the cook, if Summer were to hear of such sacrilegious talk, it would be from a far distant location where she couldn't really do much about it, because today was very much a manditory holiday that required her to head back home out of nothing more than sheer guilt and social obligation. Because, sure, okay, Beth was not a good mother; Summer could probably write a best-selling memoir on that topic alone, but she also supposed the fact that she did usually try her best and also the fact that she was still kind of reeling about the whole 'could I be a clone?' thing made Summer feel like spending the day back home wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

Especially since it gave her the chance to send BDG pictures like the one he'd be getting just then, of Summer's brother Morty sleeping on the couch...with Pancakes settled on his chest, butt all up in his face.

I love this cat.

She's a cat, Summer texted back. I'm pretty sure the only person's happiness that she cares about is her own, but since i'm the one who feeds her, its in her best interest to at least pretend to care to make me happy. also, she handles portals WAY better than spaceships atm so that's good.

That's reassuring, anyway. You can still get her from reality to reality without having to clean up after her, if it really comes down to it, huh?

He didn't have any equally entertaining photos of Stance to send at the moment, so he just settled for sending a photo of the cook, sullenly restocking the pancake bar.

I bullied him into this.

And Summer barked a laugh that was nearly enough to wake Morty; it was definitely enough to startle Pancakes into giving her a very bothered sort of look, followed by the very unspoken question of 'do you mind?'

You're my hero, Summer said, the next comments just a flood of hearts with a few rainbows thrown in for good measure.

Always fighting the good fight. Dad made brunch today. The kitchen didn't burn down, so we're counting it as a success

Which wasn't entirely fair. Jerry wasn't actually a bad cook by most standards; anything he put out fell safely into the 'decently edible' category of food for the Smith family, but that was a pretty low bar, all things considered.

Any day you don't have to fight fires in order to eat is probably a good one?

And even then, hell, some food was much improved by a little burning.

Generally, 'not on fire' is my preferred method of eating, totally.

Also, she followed up a second later, I know it's like not your holiday at all but i'm really kind of surprised and super hurt you haven't wished me a happy mother's day yet.

Folowed up by a string of crying emoji, obviously, that were in stark contrast to her actual smirk.

I think you've been here long enough to at least know about it, right??

Kanan blinked and squinted at his phone.

And then, after a few moments of thinking about his answer, texted back.

What's a mother?

... He knew damn well what a mother was, but if she was going to be a brat at him, he was going to dish it out right back.

Wooooooow, BDG. Just woooooooow. Way to totally take the wind out of what she felt was a completely awesome set up for something there, which made her narrow her eyes a little at the response as she tried to figure out if he was being sincere or being a butt.

Her money was totally on butt.

For someone claiming to not know what one is, you sure don't have any problem being a mother fucker.

And she was going to charge ahead with her origianl intent whehter he was coming with her or not.

And I'll have you know I'M a mother now. Don't know if you heard, but I came home yesterday with a precious little megaton baby girl!

Which was a hell of a way to frame an excuse to just send him a picture of a battered up, broken down, clearly-has-seen-better-days VCX-series auxiliary starfighter like the Phantom that was sitting over in the scrapyard right now.

I love her. Her name is Penelope.

Yup. She named her ship Penelope.

....needless to say, i'm totally borrowing money from my parents on this visit.

Look, Kanan's powers of prescience didn't generally extend to punchlines! He did break into a laugh, at least, more pleased than amused, when Summer delivered hers.

She's beautiful. First ship always is, right?

Poor thing looked like it needed more than just a paint job. But it also needed a paint job.

You need any help with any of the mechanic work on her, let me know. That sort of thing is technically what I'm meant to be doing as part of Hera's crew, anyway.

I now feel a retroactive sense of dread for each and every time I've been out on one of your ships.

And, boy, did she have some reservations about pointing that out, because any further questions might get a little awkward.

--but your guys's stuff is so different from that one anyway. Here's going to help me build her up, that's the plan, anyway, but if you've got any other advice for her or want to come tinker around, I'm all for it. Maybe we can even get her up and running sooner rather than later with the extra help

First ship from my reality, first ship you're going to sell jello out of as part of a cover for a rebellion, close enough to count.

Kanan was going to maintain that, now.

But yeah, I'll see if I can spot anything, get in there and do some of the dirty work. I used to have to keep the saddest hoverbus to ever fail to hover off the ground on a budget of nothing, a wish, and a prayer. And I've had to fly under the radar every bit as much as Hera has.

Seems fitting, though, Summer texted with a big fat old heart, you and the saddest hoverbus ever.

If you do anything, though, let me know, or walk me through it, make me do it myself. I want to know this thing inside and out

Not dirty. For real. Not dirty, and that was important to clarify with her.

Should be easy enough. Unless it's been modded extensively in new and exciting ways, it should be like jumping into the Phantom and giving her a tune-up. I can hop in, we can do inventory together, figure out what parts need replacing and I can show you how to run diagnostics... we might have to ask Chop really nicely if he'll go scouring the computers to make sure there's nothing in there that we don't want in there. Old logs of illegal transactions from previous owners, records of Empire-restricted modifications to the ship specs... We can find that stuff ourselves, but he can do it faster.

Yeaaaaah, as super fun as all that sounds, I'm totally okay with just letting Chopper do his thing there. I don't think he'll mind! He likes me!

Probably because she just showered him with attention and told him how cute and great and smart he was all the time. Summer knew what was up.

Either that, or so did Chopper.

Summer and Vette both, actually, Kanan. For much the same reason.

I guess there could be multiple Choppers running around, sure, but I think we're talking about the same one, which just makes me wonder if that's just not YOU. Chopper's a sweetheart.

Chopper is a menace! His favorite tool is his stun attachment!

Kanan and Chop actually kind of got along these days. But they had to maintain appearances.

Ohmygod, thank you a million times over for those wonderful visuals. Summer was going to picture that in action whenever she started to feel a little down and out from here on in.

A stun attachment is a very useful attachment, BDG.

Yup. Siding with Chopper on that one. And that's why he liked her, probably.
