Caritas- Tuesday

After radio Kitty had decided to take Lexi out for a while, because that poor kid was so far spending most of her first summer indoors because everything outside was terrible, and this was a decent week.

And then they'd gone to the park and Kitty had quickly decided that nope, it was probably not a good week, sorry, Lexi, back indoors for you. She trusted nothing at this rate.

Was she at work googling whether you could keep your baby in a protective bubble? Maybe.

Yeah, things seemed pretty fine yesterday, but then Rosa was out on a few patrols today and she realized that, dammit, this was going to be one of those slow burn weeks, wasn't it, where it really didn't get weird until later...

Which was why she might have looked a bit disgruntled when she came in to the bar for the usual Tuesday drinking.

"I'm going to lose a lot of money this week, aren't I?" she commisserated as she sat down.

"Depends. How'd you bet?" Kitty asked.

"Badly," said Rosa, since that was really the best way to describe it. "I was so sure, Kitty! That's what I get for trusting this place on anything. And you know what? I bet you anything," and maybe, Rosa, just maybe, you should just stop betting in general, hmm?, "that if I'd have put my money down the other way like all those plastic wearing assholes, we would have a normal week. Just to spite me. And my wallet."

Yes, Rosa, the island was doing this all because it hated you, okay, go with that, sure.

"Can you bet on having a terrible week next week, then?" Kitty asked, totally helpfully.

There was a thoughtful pause.

"Will you pay me back if I lose that bet and we have a good week?" Rosa asked.

She supposed the good week would be reward enough, but, screw that, she was poor now.

Kitty thought about it. "Yes," she decided. "I want my kid to safely see sunshine sometimes."

Rosa's expression actually went a little bit sympathetic at that. You sort of had to look for it, but it was there.

"Damn, that's right," she said. "Hell of a way to spend her first summer. But, hey, look on the bright side. She's way too young to even remember half this crap, right? Or any of it, really."

"This is true. Maybe we'll just wait till next year to get her in a pool."

Or, after this week, never! This was going to be one landlocked baby!

"Eh, I can give her popsicles indoors, at least."

"Doesn't that get messy?" asked Rosa, who then tilted her head with an idea and followed it up with, "But I guess the dogs could take care of that and just lick it off of her."

And that was why any fake future kids she had were entirely at the mercy of whoever the other parent happened to be.

"Hey, but I bet that had to be a fun one for her, right? The talking animals?"

Kids liked crap like that, right?

Look, Kitty, she was trying over here.

"The point of babies is to be messy," Kitty said. Seriously: cute and messy.

"She was a big fan of the talking dogs, who apparently stalk her and we didn't notice. I'm not sure if it's a problem that she's still trying to mimic them a little?"

"I know I don't really...get babies," said Rosa, looking a little doubtful, "but I'm pretty sure that's not the point of them."

Although that would continue to confirm why she definitely didn't want them.

"And I don't think that's a problem. I mean, just think about it, if she and the dogs are tight, you can save all kinds of money on babysitting."

Because it could totally work like that.

It was Fandom. It should be able to work like that here, if you asked her.

"Uh," Kitty said, "Unless the dogs turn human, I'd probably keep them away from the actual babysitting. Unless they can complete a CPR class."

"...do you require all your babysitters to know CPR?" Rosa wondered.

Because all this conversation was doing now was making her wonder if she could convincingly lead Kitty to believe that she didn't. Granted, at this point, Rosa figured she was pretty in the clear of ever having that duty fall on her leather-clad shoulders, and conversations like this were probably only helping her case, but it never hurt to have that little extra bit of insurance.

"No, but I do require them to be able to step up in case of an emergency, and as much as I love my dogs and trust especially Lucky's skills, they'd have some catching up to do."

Also they were dogs.

Rosa did not see the problem there, which was why Rosa was not ever having children.

After all, it wasn't like it was Arlo 2 they were talking about here. If it was, then she'd understand. She wouldn't trust Arlo 2 alone with a plastic bag...

Evil megalomaniac gerbils were okay, though, apparently.

"I guess so," Rosa allowed, before switching tracks a little and lifting her chin a little. "Hey. Do you remember a while ago, start the summer, when I mentioned something about maybe needing your help with next session workshop?"

"Yes! And you wouldn't tell me."

Kitty definitely remembered.

"Yeahhhh." Rosa grinned fondly in remembrance of the mild torture of keeping information from your friends. Honestly, probably one of her favorite best friend bonding activities, so long as it was her doing the withholding.

"Well," she offered, "I can tell you now. If you're still interested."

"Spill," she said, immediately.

And Rosa's grin actually got about two sizes bigger that day.

"Same thing," she said. "Fandom Gladiators. Only instead of battling each other...they're going up against teachers."

"I'm in," Kitty said, also immediately. "Apparently I missed training kids a little!"

"I knew I could count on you," Rosa said with a nod. "And I didn't even need to pull out the big guns by telling you that you could totally wear a spandex costume if you want."

Which was, of course, Rosa's way of saying please wear a spandex costume if you want.

"It's not actually that I like wearing spandex," Kitty stated.

"Yeah, sure, obviously not," said Rosa, with the same tone and expression she gave Tightpants when he said it wasn't like he actually liked wearing that stupid sexy suit of his, too.

"You have to pick a dumb codename, too," she added. "Mine's Exterminator."

"And if I told you I'm pretty much using my name as my codename these days?"

To be fair, Kitty Pryde was a great name.

It was, buuuuut....

"See, Kitty's cute and all," Rosa reasoned, "so, you know, it suits you, but it's not very....intimidating. You should at least upgrade to Cat something or something Cat."

Then again, she had kids go for Lilac and what she still was pretty sure was some sort of over-the-counter antihistamine.

"Or Tigress. You could be Tigress."

Rosa was great at names, okay?

"I am definitely not Tigress," Kitty said, looking amused. "That's too close to someone I know, anyway. I can stick with Shadowcat in that case."

Some people still did call her that! Sometimes! Quite possibly out of habit!
