Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday
"Oh no."
The summer had been a lot of things! Hectic, for sure. Random? Definitely.
Great for checking the chicken coop on the roof for eggs?
... Nope.
And so, instead of the regular puppy pen setup today, there was one with heat lamps and straw and what felt like ten million fluffy chirping baby chicks, all running about and tripping over one another and peep-peep-peeping to their downy hearts' content.
"Please," Zack pleaded to the vet, "please tell me there's a farm somewhere on the mainland that wants to take them?"
Furnado was open. How did you feel about chickens?

Because his methods involved....a trip to the animal shelter. Of course! Why wouldn't it?
"Hello ♥!" he sang out as he breezed into Furnado with the always-present feeling of amusement he'd feel for places like this that he was...pretty sure weren't here back when he was the first time around. "I am in need of some assistance ♥! Do you have any tur--"
It was in that moment of his entrance that he'd glanced over to the puppy pen and saw what was going on there.
"My, but that's a lot of chickens," he said.
Always with the astute observations, this one.

"It is a lot of chickens," Zack agreed, smiling crookedly. "I don't suppose you're in the market for thirty or so?"
Look, a guy could hope, here.

Shunsui.
He chuckled a little, then considered for the briefest moments that, even though he'd intended it as a joke, he actually could save the little chickies from such a fate by adopting them. He did have plenty of space in his apartment, after all, and they did look rather fluffy and soft and...
...no, no, Shunsui. Business first, and then you can consider adopting thirty or so chickens, because just think of how nice they'd be for napping companions! But there was also the fact that he would then have thirty or so chickens to take care of.
Best start with just the two he'd come in here for.
Animals. Not chickens.
"I am here for a sort of bird, though, should you have any," he continued. "I am looking for a canary ♥. And a turtle, but not in that order ♥."
It just sounded weird the other way around.

"As a matter of fact, we've got both of those things," he replied, nodding first toward the aquariums and then toward the bid cages, because that was the proper order, yes. "Turtles and canaries. Have you got experience caring for either?"

Look him in the eye and tell him that wouldn't be adorable. Go on. Just try it.

"So you don't want one that's prone to nipping," Zack surmised, smiling crookedly and leading Shunsui over to the tanks that had turtles in them. "We do have some friendlier, smaller ones, and most of them are big enough for carrying a few bills and some coins around!"
Lucky day!

But his attention was then swinging entirely toward the tank of turtles, beaming down at them before leaning in for a closer look and waggling his fingers at them through the glass. "Well, hello, there, pretties ♥! Which one of you shelled lovelies would like a new home, hmm ♥?"
He took a moment to grin back over at Zack. "It always is so difficult choosing just one, isn't it ♥?"

"Not necessarily harder," he mused with a soft smile. "It just requires a little more patience and time ♥. Good thing I've always had plenty of that!"
One of many benefits of the whole being dead thing, really.

"Which are important things to have when you're adopting multiple pets at a time, too," he offered. "Or even just one, really."
A little painted turtle blinked over toward the wiggling fingers, as did a red-eared slider. Those wiggles were definitely attention-grabbing, weren't they?
