Peter smiled and waved at everybody as they came in.

"Welcome to Modern Earth Entertainment. If you haven't been here before, this 'class' is about catching up on a lot of movies - moving picture entertainments - that have been popular. We might watch some TV or play some games, too, but so far it's all been movies. They've been around for about a hundred years, so there are plenty of them. People from local Earth might refer to them, and they can show you a lot about Earth, so it seemed like a good way to figure things out.

"My name's Peter Octavian, by the way. I started this because movie nights are fun and I was a bit behind the times - my world's at least a decade behind this one, and I was...somewhere else...for a long time anyway. If there's anything you'd like to see or hate to see, let me know and I'll see what I can do, at least when the equipment is cooperating. There are chips and popcorn and sodas," he waved at the table, "to eat and drink and possibly throw at the screen, but keep in mind we do still have to clean the place up."

He readied the DVD player. "Since Fandom is all about other worlds and other versions of things, I thought we'd start with a movie from last year that's about that, too. Maybe it'll help with the concept if you're having trouble with it. This one's animated - drawn pictures - instead of live acting."

He pushed play. "Enjoy!"

Introduce yourselves to your fellow folks!

Amaya figured this semester's move to Mondays would probably be a good thing, she just hoped whatever wound up being played that week was good enough to keep her attention, else she'll just spend the whole time making plans for her class in the morning.

However, being able to just sit there and make plans for her classiness the morning through the mushy or musical parts didn't sound half-bad, either.

Yup. Definitely a good move, and she was going to load up on snacks because maybe someone had been a bit too distracted by daggers to remember about lunch today.

"Welcome back, Amaya!" Peter grinned at her. "Not a lot of mushy stuff in today's, I promise."

"Thanks, Peter," Amaya grinned back with a nod, and had to laugh a little. "Much appreciated. Good to know you're always looking out for me. How'd you been? Ready to confound the lot of us with a whole new batch of moving pictures?"

"I've been okay. You?"

He grinned. "That's the plan! I was thinking of maybe some TV shows or games or something, too, but I haven't quite figured out where to start."

Maybe with Pong.

"I've been well, thanks," Amaya said. "Eager to get started on the next semester, really, and back in the shop classroom. Some shows and games could be an interesting little splash of something different, I think, especially the games. Might make things a bit more interactive than the occasional whining and moaning."

Which she had gotten much better about since she first started coming to these things.

And, also, games seemed like they would significant reduce the ever-present threat of too much mush.

"That"s what i was thinking," Peter agreed. "And some games can teach you a lot about modern culture, too. I'll have to see if I can find some."

They would totally end up playing Cards Against Humanity.

Fjord was absolutely helping himself to the drinks and some chips, pretty much anything he could fill his mouth with that didn't involve those damn popcorn kernels.

Socializing!

"Hi, Fjord!" Peter smiled at him. "Welcome back."

"You say that like I went anywhere," Fjord replied, turning a wry grin Peter's way. "But hell, I wouldn't miss this. Ain't like I got anything needs doin' on this end of the week, I might as well take in some entertainment tonight."

"You're back here, anyway," Peter said. "I'm glad to have familiar faces coming in again."

"Well, where else am I gonna see movies, right?"

... There was a cinema in town.

Your hotel room had a TV.

"I'm sure there are some other options, but I'm glad to have people for this one, anyway," Peter said. "Are you recovering from the summer yet?"

Fjord made a little scoffing sound, and then shrugged and cracked open a can of Coke.

"Sure am."

No.

"Good; I think we could all use a bit of nothing special for a while," Peter said. "Are you teaching at the school this semester?"

"No fuckin' chance," Fjord replied easily, shrugging one shoulder. "I ain't much of a teacher, I was better off the sooner I came to accept that."

"I can relate to that," Peter said, giving him a small crooked smile.

"Ah, yeah?" Fjord looked curious. "They ever manage to corner you and twist your arm into teaching at the school, then?"

"Not yet, thankfully," Peter said. "I'm just not much of a teacher."

"I almost feel like that calls for a high-five," Fjord admitted, after a pause. "Teenagers. Bunch'a menaces, you know."

"I don't really know what to do with modern teenagers," Peter confessed. "When I was their age, I was already a soldier. And that was...a long time ago."

"Never did the soldierin' bit, but I ain't never had much by way of typical teenager years, either," Fjord noted. "And sure as hell not with shit like they got in the school here. I know plenty of 'em are pretty self-sufficient, but I ain't much for nurturin' people, either."

"I try, but I'm not sure I'm very good at it," Peter said. "I'd have no idea how to teach them. Or what to teach them, really."

"I'd almost feel confident in teachin' 'em how to sail, but shit, that Danger Shop room ain't ever gonna cooperate with me enough for that to happen."

Pirates of Penzance sim. Bah.

"Presumably it's just a matter of teachin' what you know. But knowin' how to present it, that's important too."

"I'm not sure I know any useful skills, and I definitely wouldn't know how to present it," Peter said.

"You ain't got any useful skills?" Fjord raised a brow at that. "How the hell you manage to live this long?"

"Not any teachable ones," Peter said. "Soldiering, I guess, but," he shrugged, "I learned that so long ago I barely remember how I learned, let alone how I'd teach it. I've been painting, and I can take care of plants, but I'm still learning those as I go along."

Fjord gave a small, thoughtful hum.

"Any other languages? Hobbies besides painting? You do plant arrangements too, right?"

Hey, he was trying.

Peter quirked a smile at him. "If you think anybody needs to learn medieval Greek or German." He wasn't teaching anybody Hell tongues.

Then, remembering who he was speaking to, "Languages that nobody's spoken in this world in a few hundred years."

Fjord paused a moment at that, and then shrugged.

"Pretty sure half my last class wasn't actually from this world. Maybe more. All? I'm almost feelin' like all. But there's enough parallel between the language we're all speakin' now, English, Common, whatever people wanna call it, you never know if someone's gonna have a use for... German?"

Zemnian!

... Medieval Zemnian. Huh.

"Maybe, but I wouldn't have any idea how to teach it, either," Peter said. "Everything I learned, except the flowers, I learned over a thousand years ago. I barely remember how I learned it."

"They probably got books on teachin' that sort of thing," Fjord mused. And then shrugged. "Not that I'm real invested in you teachin' or anything, either. I got no reason to give a shit unless someone forces my hand into it again anyway."

"Yeah, if I decided I wanted to teach, I'd probably look those up," Peter agreed. "But I'm not really interested, so unless the moose comes after me, I'm fine not knowing how."

All about other worlds!

Yeah, the move to Mondays was definitely going to turn out to be a good one, because if Amaya didn't have her class the next morning, you jus tknow she'd wind up coming out of tomorrow with a new set of mechanical appendages strapped to her back with varying levels of actual utility...

Because it was appropriate and also because if anybody thinks too hard about it later, Miguel deserves a hard time.
