Community Center Class: Modern Earth Entertainment, Monday

Peter waved hello as everybody showed up. "Hi. Welcome back to Modern Earth Entertainment. I've got chips and popcorn and sodas for everybody, and again, feel free to throw things at the screen, but remember we've got to clean up when we're done.

"Today we're going a little further back in time, to a movie that came out almost eighty years ago, in 1960. Movies had been widely in color for about ten years then, but this one's still in black and white. Apparently the director wanted to keep the cost and the gore down." He shrugged.

"This director - Alfred Hitchcock - was famous for his suspense films. This one's based off a book, which was partly inspired by a real case of a killer. The movie was really influential and is considered a classic."

He pressed play. "Enjoy."

Snacks and drinks! Say hi to each other!

Snacks and drinks! Half the reason Amaya came to these things!

Well, a third. Perhaps a little more, though, since even though she liked the saying hi to each other part, she sometimes got a little too distracted by ~~inevitable work~~ the snacks and drinks part to get around to it.

"Hi, Amaya." Peter nodded at her. "How are you this week?"

Shunsui had been meaning to come around to this movie thing that he recalled being mentioned to him at some point in time (though the details of who and when and where were incredibly fuzzy by now). Either way, he thought it sounded like an excellent opportunity to perhaps meet some of thoe beautiful women in town whose paths he had yet to cross (or had rather been intending to cross), but he had been told Thursdays, he remembered that distinctly. By the time he finally got around to arriving, however, the day had changed, something he discovered last week when he arrived and was informed of the switch in days ~~which I planned on actually posting and then forgot completely~~.

No matter, though, as the person who informed him of this change was lovely and, he found out, could handle her sake exceptionally well.

But he was here now, eager to meet and greet and watch some hopefully tragically romantic and sweeping movies with some hopefully splendidly beautiful ladies! If anything, he figured it might even prove to be excellent inspiration for that novel he was supposedly writing.

"Ah ♥!" he said, because of course he couldn't make an entrance into a room without a good deal of fluttering robes and flowing words. "So this is the class on modern entertainment, finally ♥! Oh and there's snacks and drinks ♥!" But he held up his sake bottle, giving it a little shake, sloshing the contents inside. "I hope it's alright if I've brought my own ♥"

It was...going to be a problem if it wasn't alright that he brought his own.

"That's fine," Peter told him, a bit bemused. "Welcome to the class. It's more a movie night than anything, though. How have you been...Shunsui, right?"

Seivarden didn't expect much of the movies, but it was a good way to get out of the apartment, and it was always good to see at least one of the regulars.

She grabbed a drink and a popcorn bowl of her own, one still untouched by bare hands.

It's a classic!

Seivarden frowned as she kept chewing on her popcorn. She really made an effort not to to comment on anything, but the expression on her face displayed a mix of disappointment and irritation.

That didn't mean she didn't jump slightly at some scenes.

"Not your thing?" Peter asked when it was over.

"I..." Seivarden began. "Keeping your dead mother in the basement and dressing up as her to kill people is a bit... disturbing. But I get that was the point. Why would a society let that sort of thing happen?"

She frowned.

"Does it happen or is this just a movie?"

"I..." Peter hesitated. "It's only a movie, but I wouldn't bet against it having happened at least once. Sometimes people are...bad."

"Well, yes, I suppose they are," Seivarden admitted. "In most places. Keeping a dead mother in the basement is not generally a theme for entertainments where I'm from, so I didn't expect it."

She wasn't going to ask how they treated people who did. That would probably be horrifying too.

Peter barked in laughter. "There are a lot of films out there about people who are worse than the usual. They're usually meant to be scary."

"Scary movies are a thing, then?" Seivarden asked.

"Yeah." Peter nodded. "There are a lot of them out there. I usually stay away from them here, but I didn't think this one would traumatize anyone."

"Oh, I wasn't traumatized," Seivarden said quickly. "I was just... surprised. And a bit disgusted."

She made a gesture with her hand. "Not intended as criticism."

She didn't want this to go into some kind of "try to understand people" territory.

"Oh, I understood," Peter assured her. "I just meant, I don't show a lot of horror films because I don't want anyone traumatized. I didn't think this one would be bad, though, so I chanced it.

"You don't get that kind of thing back home? Horror films or books or anything?"

"I wouldn't say it's a popular thing," Seivarden said. "Although I suppose some uncivilized planets in entertainments can be quite scary."

"That's not exactly the same thing." Peter stifled a sigh. "For horror and suspense movies, the scary part is the whole point of the thing. A lot of times they're supernatural things, too." He gave a crooked smile. "There are a lot of vampire films out there."

Which he avoided except for the ones he'd promised to show to people.

He's here!
