The Perk- Thursday morning

Rey's days has gotten pretty busy, but in a way she was good with. If she was going to be here, she liked knowing that she was working towards something and wasn't just wasting her time.

That didn't mean she didn't appreciate having a day where she didn't have something already planned to do. It still felt like a bit of a novelty.

Today she headed for the Perk, because while she couldn't justify the cost all the time, once in a while she figured she could get something pumpkin spiced. Once she had that, she found a seat near the window to people watch, and maybe she was trying to listen when she heard one barista ask the other if they had a union.

If Luke was going to deal with his cranky father after a portal trip that had taken him through three completely unnecessary pit stops, he was going to need a lot of caffeine to do it.

He gave the girl in the shop a friendly smile and then went up to the counter to order his mocha.

Rey looked up, and if it looked like she'd seen a ghost, well.

Her next thought was that she recognized him in a different way than the obvious, because she'd met this very person before without knowing who it was.

Luke's eyes grew bigger at the change in her expression. "Are you all right?"

"You're Luke," she said, trying to pull it together.

[tatooine_doofus]

"I am," Luke said, nodding. "Were you at the bar thing that my father organized?"

[thatwaslucky]

"Yeah. We talked there, right?"

She'd honestly thought finding out she'd had classes with Darth Vader would be the weirdest thing Fandom could throw at her. No, feeling someone die and then running into a younger version of them in a coffee shop was much weirder.

"We did," Luke said, "but I'm not normally here. Is that why you were so surprised to see me?"

Your feelings betray you, Rey.

Rey's answer was slow, because she had no idea where to start.

"I knew my version of you," she said. "I didn't realize that's who you were."

And then she made a face because that seemed so very confusing.

"That is a very confusing sentence," Luke said sympathetically. "So a different me knows you now and didn't when we first met?"

"Yes," she said after a moment of parsing that out. And she had to admit, a little sheepishly, "I thought you were a myth back home."

"I'm definitely not a myth," Luke said, taking his mocha with a smile. "I'm also much shorter in person, apparently."

"I actually never considered that," Rey admitted.

She did find herself glancing at his right hand, though.

"Do you get that a lot?"

His hand wasn't gold, but it wasn't real, either.

"A fair bit, yeah," he said with another smile. "I'm apparently supposed to be 3 meters tall. I would've settled for being Anakin's height, honestly."

"Is it weird, hearing that sort of thing from people you don't know?"

This Luke already seemed much more easygoing about the legend status. She was curious.

"Yes," Luke admitted, making a slight face. "I try not to get into huge crowds of beings who are anxious to meet me. It's uncomfortable."

Rey blinked. "People do that?"

It made sense, she supposed, but for a solitary person who had met all the heroes of the Rebellion in very small or one-on-one scenarios, that just sounded... overwhelming.

"It depends on the planet I'm on and how poorly they were treated by the Empire," Luke said.

"That sounds like a lot," Rey said, still frowning.

A secluded island made more sense now.

[tatooine_doofus]

"It's not my favorite," Luke admitted, "but I didn't exactly grow up around a ton of people. It's easy to get overwhelmed."

"I understand that," she agreed. "Tatooine, right?"

[tatooine_doofus]

"Right," Luke said, smiling. "And you were from the Outer Rim too, right?"

[thatwaslucky]

"Inner Rim, Western Reaches," Rey replied. "Jakku."

She was a little curious about his reaction to that, considering it didn't seem to be important everywhere.

Luke looked a little confused by the name. "Jakku?" he repeated.

[thatwaslucky]

"It's pretty much nowhere," she said, with the tiniest smile. "So, um, what do you do these days?"

Besides apparently be happy and not a hermit.

"Right now I'm trying to restart the Jedi Order from basically nothing using, well, nothing," Luke said with a little laugh. "I'm back here to ask Dad a few questions about how things worked when there was more than...well, two of us. One and a half? Leia's still only learning in bits and pieces."

Oh, her heart.

"Sounds like a lot of work," Rey managed.

[tatooine_doofus]

"Yes, but I cannot imagine a galaxy without the Jedi," Luke admitted.

Yeah.

"So," Rey said, "now you're trying to base it off what they did before?"

[tatooine_doofus]

He nodded. "The Empire was pretty thorough in destroying those records. Palpatine hated the Jedi."

[thatwaslucky]

"And if you have someone who can tell you what it's like directly..."

It didn't escape Rey's notice that they actually had quite a few similarities that she wished she'd known about months ago.

Luke nodded. "I come and bug my father about it, then decide if it seems like something we should keep."

That sounded about right.

"What do you do about training?" she wondered. No reason.
