Luke's, Wednesday

A cry of "HA!" echoed through the diner Wednesday, entirely unconnected to the killer clowns roving the streets. Regina rushed out of her office, holding a spellbook, a broad grin on her face.

"I finally found it! Where the curse went wrong! I can get out of here and find my son!"

". . . Cool?" the cook said. "But, uh. What should the specials be?"

"What?" Regina looked around the diner. "Oh hell, I should probably do something with this place before I leave, shouldn't I."

Today's specials
Something something whatever with apples

Luke's was open. And currently clown-free. . . .

[Regina is about to head out permanently! She was very fun while she lasted, but I have done nothing at all with her in ages, and I'm not good at leaving characters to fallow. . . .
Luke's management hand-off with Duke will be the last thread chronologically for Regina. Duke can still be found in the diner if you like.]

Duke shook his head, wrapping his hands over the back of his neck and staring back at her, his silver eyes wide and startlingly visible, even from a distance.

"Don't know. Still figuring that part out."

He was definitely troubled. And said trouble definitely had to do with blood.

And apparently murder.

"Your eyes," Kathy said, looking at him. "They were brown before."

Duke gave her a horrified look, pressing his hand to his cheek. "What the hell color are they now?!"

Even as he spoke, the rush was fading again, and the silver faded away.

"They were silver, like old coins," Kathy said. "They're back to brown but they definitely weren't a second ago."

And now she was asking the question that had started the whole mess. "Are you okay?"

Duke rubbed his face with both hands, then dragged them up into his hair. "Not particularly, no." He took a deep breath. "Seems to be gone again though. For now. My eyes turned silver? Like, just now, after I touched your leg?"

"I guess so," Kathy said. "You wiped my leg, then you sprang back and kinda freaked out and when you looked up at me, your eyes were silver. They changed back right as you asked what color they were."

"It was, um." Duke looked at his hand. It was still shaking faintly. The full force of the rush was gone, but his body was still trying to process all the excess adrenaline. "Your blood, I guess. I got some on my hand and. . . ."

And it was clearly not on his hand anymore.

"I, like. Absorbed it or something."

"Absorbed it?" Kathy asked. "Are you some kind of meta, too?"

“No,” Duke said automatically. “Maybe? What’s a meta?”

"Mutant might be a term you're familiar with?" Kathy asked, looking at him to see if that term rang any bells. "People with special powers. They can do things other people can't. In some worlds, they're like...human plus. A little something extra in their biology. In other worlds, it's harder to figure out the whys and wherefores."

Raven was a mutant. Kathy was a meta.

“Like Kitty,” Duke said, then shook his head a little. “My world we call that ‘troubled’. Because the people who can do do things are pretty universally fucked.”

Kathy winced. "Yeah," she said. "Other people tend to be...really cruel to what they can't understand. Especially if they're also afraid."

Oh Kathy. No. not like that, honey.

Duke let out a small, pained laugh and slowly got to his feet. "Yeah. There's that, too." He looked down at her, hands shoved firmly in his pockets. "You okay? That all looked kind of . . . painful."

"I've had more fun," Kathy allowed. "But nothing's broken. Just bruises, I think." She rubbed the side of her face. "You? Feeling all right after all of...that?"

Duke looked away and shrugged. "I'm fine. Not even bruised." His hands would probably still shake if they weren't shoved into his pockets, but she didn't need to know that. "You mentioned a first aid kit?"

"In the kitchen," she said, nodding in that direction. "Tell 'em you need it for Kathy."

Hopefully that would keep their more mischievous impulses in check. If not out of affection for her, than because she would absolutely tattle to Eliot.

"Yeah, well. If they're not willing to just offer up a first aid kit to anyone who's injured, they're fired."

They wouldn't be fired. Mostly because Duke wasn't really convinced he was in charge here, yet.

He headed for the kitchen, keeping his distance from the staff, and came back a few minutes later with the largest first aid kit he'd ever seen.

"You didn't mention that it's basically a mini surgical kit."

Kathy gave him a confused look. "...You haven't been here long, have you?" she asked and then amended. "Okay, this one is a little much. My dad's kind of an 'I've seen it all and am ready for anything' kinda guy."

". . . And therefore stashes enormous first aid kits in random local restaurants?"

"He was the diner's previous owner. Or, I guess second-previous, now that it's yours," Kathy said, smiling a bit even though it made her lower lip ache a bit. "Then he and his partners got married this summer and left the island. That being said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the answer was 'yes' anyway."

"Partners," Duke said, leaning on the plural. ". . . Nice."

He opened the kit, found a pair of gloves, and snapped them on. He held up his hands, showing the lack of skin.

"Should we try this again?"

"Yeah," Kathy said, with a smile. Like father, like daughter, she supposed. "The three of them're off on Dad's boat on a really extended honeymoon.

She held out her leg again. "Second time's a charm?"

"And he has a boat. I think I like this guy." Duke pulled out a couple alcohol wipes and some gauze, and took a closer look at her leg with a certain clinical efficiency. "I need to worry about him coming back and kicking me out of here at some point?"

"Nah," Kathy said, with the patience of someone who had sat through this kind of patching up a lot. "I think they're planning to set up shop in New Orleans. He might come back and check in, though. Just to see how everyone's getting along."

“And hear all about me attacking his kid. Awesome.”

Duke had the cut cleaned and bandaged in no time. He clearly had a fair amount of experience with first aid.

“Just warn me if I need to worry about him coming after me with a shotgun.”
