After two days of this, Rey fully expected that she'd walk in and her boss would be five, or the gremlin at least be even smaller, but so far at least it was a normal enough day here.

Mostly she was having to fix toys that people had broken and brought in. As someone who'd never had toys aside from what she could make herself, she did spend some time looking up what certain things were meant to do. At least twice you might hear her say something like "That seems excessive."

Well, it wouldn't be a weekend for tiny Steve if he wasn't nursing a black eye and a split lip, but he was currently trying to sneak past Rey and upstairs like maybe she wouldn't notice.

She was getting so much practice at this.

"Hello there," she greeted him.

Steve jumped. "Oh! Hi!"

"People really like sneaking this weekend," Rey said, frowning when she got a look at his face. "What happened to you?"

"Not much!" Steve said stubbornly. "Just some jerks behind the movie theater."

[thatwaslucky]

She'd absolutely come home like this a few times. It had not happened in a long time.

"Are you all right? Is everything working the way it should?"

"Well, my eye's kinda sore, but it'll be okay after I put some ice on it," Steve assured her.

Rey was still going over to him to see if there was anything more wrong.

"Did you at least get a few good hits in?"

[heroic_jawline]

"Course," Steve muttered out of a misplaced sense of pride.

"Good. Half the time, that's the really important part," she said. "Can I see your eye?"

"I guess," Steve said. "I was gonna go upstairs and fix it myself..."

"And you can if you want, but I want to make sure there's not worse damage," she said, looking him over. "Call it habit."

"You sound like my ma," Steve grumbled.

"How many fights has she been in?" Rey countered, stepping back when she was satisfied it was just a black eye.

"It's not polite to ask," Steve declared.

[thatwaslucky]

"Probably," she agreed. "She knows what she's talking about."

"And she's a nurse," Steve said, nodding.

[thatwaslucky]

"That's got to come in handy." At times beyond the obvious, too.

Steve nodded, eyes big. "I get sick a lot."

[thatwaslucky]

"That doesn't seem fair." Not that anyone should get beaten up p or sick, but both seemed really excessive.

Steve shrugged. "Maybe not, but complainin' won't fix it."

It sounded like he'd heard that a lot.

"Both statements seem pretty true," Rey pointed out.

Steve nodded, very solemn for nine-who-looked-six-ish.

"Do you need anything?" Rey asked, since she didn't know if there was anyone upstairs who could help out.

"Maybe a hug?" Steve mumbled.

[thatwaslucky]

Rey was going to get very good at giving out hugs to kids. She didn't hate that.

"Of course," she said, holding out her arms.

"Thanks," Steve said into her shirt.

[thatwaslucky]

"You okay?" she asked, not letting go until he wanted to.

"I'm okay," Steve mumbled.

"Should I bring back cookies after my break?"

Listen. These were things that made Rey feel better, she'd offer it to others, too.

Steve looked up. "What kind of cookies?"

[thatwaslucky]

"I din know, what kind did you want?"

She absolutely didn't know how many kinds there were.

"Oatmeal raisin?"

Steve, what is wrong with you.

[thatwaslucky]

"All right, you'll get oatmeal raisin."

And some chocolate chip because Steve, what.

Oatmeal AND raisins! A Great Depression dream come true!

"Thank you," he said politely.

"I think it's what I'm here for."

Seriously, this was just her weekend.

"You hand out cookies and hugs all the time?" Steve beamed at her. "Best job ever! Like Santa!"

Rey barely stopped herself from questioning Santa, whom she did not get.

"It's turning out to not be terrible," she admitted. Even if it was just a weekend thing.
