Nina was still pretty tired after the whole thing yesterday, honestly, and between that and the end of the semester catching her by surprise (where had the time gone?!) the question of what, exactly, to do with her class had arisen.

She'd run through various scenarios, coming up with a few that, really, she might have to revisit later as full-fledged class ideas, and considered just talking everyone through the rest of the entire story.

But she wasn't sure an hour would be enough to talk through it.

And it would hurt her feelings a lot if people left while she was still rambling through her convoluted romance.

So…

"Well, compatriots," she said, hanging out at the bar with a tankard in front of her. The bar was clean and tidy and—well, yes, inside her classroom at the community center, of course. Like usual.

It also looked suspiciously like a pillow fort had been forced to be a bar instead.

"We failed at saving the Prince and it looks like the Evil Lord Flatcake is going to win and Princess Danisha is likely going to perish in a terrible death…………….."

Nina took a sip of her milk contemplatively.

"If we had, like, more time……………..," she said, then trailed off. "But that's the thing about quests, you know??????????????????? They have time limits and eventually they run out………………. it's not always like a game, where everything waits on you to be ready…………….."

Bah. That was pretty gloomy.

"But, you know, Princess Danisha said something to me, before we headed out on this journey in case this should happen," she was making it up as she went along, but Nina was good at that, "and she said: I'd like my obituary to hint at a sequel."

Nina clapped her hands and servers began coming around, handing out breakfast to people.

"So, like, even though everything's terrible right now and we've failed………………. it doesn't have to be the end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, like, eat up and remember that the story is only over when you let it be over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It's certainly a thing!

I mean, like, breakfast for supper is both delicious AND topical given this class.

Pancakes for all.

Duke couldn't help a small, wry chuckle at the pancakes (on multiple levels). He went for a few pastries instead.

"This has been fun. Even if we didn't actually manage to save the princess."

"Or find the prince or stop Evil Lord Flatcake," Nina said agreeably. "And, like, half of you still have the glowing shards of the prince's ring inside of you..........."

A pause.

"It was a strange adventure," she admitted. "But, like, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Yeah, what was up with that? Unless you're planning to run the sequel this summer and need to keep it a secret or something."

He would totally show up if she ran the sequel this summer.

"I haven't decided yet about the sequel," she admitted, glancing into her tankard. "I mean, like, I never realized how much work a class was before, you know??????????????? But I guess I could think about it..........."

"I know what you mean," Duke said. "Lesson planning last fall took forever."

He didn't have to plan Bird Hats class. He just showed up and hoped the bird of the week wasn't too awful.

Bird Hats class was pretty great that way, it was true.

"And, like, it's easy enough to come up with the story," she said, "but it's not always easy to go 'so what do people do with this' and make it something interesting??????????????????????? I mean, like, no one really wants just a story class, right????????????????????"

Because she could do a story class. Story time with Nina.

"That does sound a bit more like a social event than a class," Duke said. "But . . . so do half the classes at the school, so."

She grinned at that.

"Oh, yeah," Nina said, "like, I'm super grateful that my world isn't relying on my education here to, like, actually help me get a job or go into higher education...................."

"If your world is anything like mine, they're more interested in knowing you have a diploma than what you actually learned getting it, anyway."

She shrugged a little.

"There's not really much call for diplomas at all," she said. "Like, sure, the Academy is in Greenhill and Harmonia's got a college, but that's mostly for magic and magic-adjacent trades. Everything else is more.............. either family or connection based??????????????? Like, you're a farmer because your dad's a farmer or you become a healer because your mom was friends with one and got them to take you on as an apprentice................."

"Huh. Old school. I guess that's kind of how I got my usual gig. Dad worked boats, so now I have one of my own."

Simon was not, as far as Duke knew, a smuggler. But he'd died when Duke was eight, so he might just not have heard about it.

"So what are you hoping to do when you graduate? Following in your folks' footsteps? Or land an apprenticeship?"

"Oh, like, working for Greenhill's government, probably," Nina said, as if she wasn't already doing so. She wasn't really keeping it a secret for any reason. "Like, I'm a ward of the state so.............."

Well, yeah.

"Or moving to my brother's world," she said thoughtfully. "I haven't really decided yet????????????????"

"You've got time," Duke said. "Ward of the state, huh? You know, I almost ended up one of those. Hopefully your state was better than mine."

She shrugged a little.

Her feelings on it were a lot more conflicted these days.

"They looked after me," Nina said, "like, they never asked for a baby to be left on their doorstep??????????????? I like to think I turned out okay?????????????????"

"Probably better than I did," Duke said. He'd been way more cynical when he was her age. "Glad to hear you've got options, though."

There was enough cynicism in the world without her adding to it!

"And two more years of school here to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, like, plenty of time??????????????? Prompto and I haven't even mentioned what I'd be doing after school yet and, like, he's really the only other person that gets a say????????????????"

Well, it was more complicated than that, but he was the only person who Nina would allow to have a say that might sway her.

"I mean, I'd say ultimately you're the only person who gets a say, but sure."

Nina considered that.

He wasn't entirely wrong--if she didn't like what Prompto had to say she'd probably just go ahead and do what she wanted anyway.

"I'm not very good at family," Nina admitted, "but, like, I've found that compromise is a lot more important than I thought it would be???????????????? So, like, he gets a say, but it would still be my decision????????????"

Duke shrugged. "I guess. Never had much luck with family either." He glanced away, the corner of his lip curving up. "Until really recently, anyway."

Who isn't sure she was any good at this professor thing but it was a lot of fun!

Y'all were awesome for playing along with this and I'm deeply sorry that the world conspired to turn my brain to mush for this. Rude, world. I'd like a refund on 2020.
