Fandom Trooper Station, Wednesday

Danny was finishing up his report, blissfully unaware of the existence of radio. Because that was a weird thing, guys. It was weird to get told what everyone in town was doing every day. You weird, weird, cult town.

"Rise and shine, babe," Danny called, kindly depositing a coffee at Crocker's cell. Because he wasn't here to torture people. Much. Look, only within the legally allowed bounds.

Because, you know what? Today was a good day.

The Troopers? They had huddled up with popcorn at the ready for when this popped off, though. So, there was that.

[you gotta know it's open!]

Look. Rosa and all her SP was just coming in to get something she'd left in her desk on Monday, and she was so dedicated to her ability to completely blow off her coworkers that she breezed in, went to her desk, found what she was looking for, and didn't even notice anything until the drawer was closed.

And then she noticed. Oh, did she notice.

She looked at Williams, then back to the cell, and then back to Williams again, and lifted her brows as she found herself wedged between the desire to not get involved and the desperate curiosity that needed to know.

But there went her hopes that Williams was just an expert-level slacker and not a try-hard go-getter. Damn.

"You don't waste time," she finally said, "do you?"

Sounds like someone just didn't know how to slack.

But someone did, apparently, know how to overcompensate.

(She guessed. Rosa was no psychiatrist, although she did consider it for half a semester).

One brow dropped while the other remained quirked.

"What are the charges?" she asked. "Last I checked, you can't arrest someone just for being an asshole."

That last part was only said outloud because she knew Crocker was probably in earshot. And she was physically incapable of not sounding just a touch disappointed when she said it, too.

"That's not shady," Rosa snorted, "that's just Duke."

Any points Williams had earned yesterday were very quickly not just dropping, but were being demolished in a near nuclear blast. It was much easier dealing with assholes she had to work with when they ran around in silly uniforms.

"Pretty bold, by the way," she commented, "for the new guy to walk in here and assume the old guys haven't done shit without even talking to them about it first."

As much as Rosa appreciated not having to talk to you, Williams, there were situations where maaaaaybe it might not hurt to check in with the (ugh) tenured detective in the place before you go running around arresting assholes who had, for the most part, kept their noses clean and seemed smart enough to at least know not to shit where they ate.

She glanced back over to the cell for a moment, then back to Williams. "But, yeah," she said, "you have fun with that one, go-getter. I'd offer my help, but, clearly, you don't think you need it."

Rosa was absolutely not denying the shadiness of any of this.

Up to and including Captain Go-Getter's overly aggressive justice boner enthusiasm.

So she was a litte torn, between actually saying something, or just sitting back and enjoying the shitshow.

"Is this just...a thing you do?" she wondered. "A real show-up, take-charge renegade type who clearly knows everything?"

Maybe he'd prefer Detective Justice Boner, then. Rosa was really warming up to that one, actually.

"Doing your job?" Rosa asked. "No. Not at all. Doing your job without consulting the resident detective about it when you were literally in the same room for presumably most of the day earlier this week? To start confronting citizens when you've only been here, what is it, five days? Without even a single 'hey, Diaz, what can you tell me about this," she hitched a thumb toward the cell, "shady asshole?'"

There was a pointed pause.

"Yeah," she concluded, "that really is so weird."

Rosa snorted. "I mean," she said, "a little late for that. Clearly, there's not anything I can't tell you that you don't already know from your very impressive, detailed, comprehensive investigations, Detective Williams. But I get it. I understand. I know I'd be real concerned about a two-bit smuggler in a junky boat who teaches kids how to make hats for birds and runs the local diner. The guy's a total creep, but he's been clean since he got here."

What she understood was that this was exactly the kind of cop that made Crocker such an annoying asshole for nearly every conversation she had had with him that didn't involve whiskey. She sighed.

"He's not," she said, putting extra bite on that word, "my buddy. And if he actually did something to deserve it, I'd be completely happy to let him rot in there. You...do understand that this," she twirled a finger in the air as if to indicate the whole situation, "isn't normal, right? To come into a new jurisdiction and take on a case without even telling anyone, least of all the detective and sheriff already here? Listen, I hate canvasing for info as much as the next guy. More, probably, because talking to people sucks. But a good cop doesn't--"

Suddenly, Rosa stopped. She blinked. An expression akin to horror took over her face.

"Oh, god," she realized, "I'm actually giving you a gut-feeling speech."

She...did not know how she felt about this.

"Ugh." She shook her head to try to chase away the gross feeling that came with that realization. "Point is: gut-feelings are important, sometimes they're right, but if you think going directly to a suspect on a hunch without covering a little more ground first is a good idea or normal, you suck as a detective."

And she was getting a little pissed off because she was beginning to see all the extra paperwork this guy was going to make.

"Williams," Rosa stated, her face set and firm as she stared at him, "you were literally sitting in that desk right over there not even however many idk what is layout? feet from me and not once asked me a single question about this little investigation of yours. The problem isn't you wanting to look into it; the problem is that you didn't even try to."

"That's a pretty short process," Rosa noted. "And what does that have to do with anything? Who cares if you don't trust anyone. You shouldn't trust anyone."

She eyed Williams a little bit just then.

"You're a detective," she said, "so I assume you've had gun training. Were you sick on the day they covered trigger discipline? Or do you just always do a half-assed job before going in with guns blazing?"

"Ohmygod," said Rosa, blinking several times to help keep her own building rage in, her own hands lifting now as if trying to place things directly in front of him to see, "are you really this dumb? Okay, let me say things a little bit slower for you this time so you can follow me: It's. Not. Unusual. To. Arrest. Anyone. On. A. Legitimate. Charge." Which she could agree that the charge was technically legitimate, but still a pretty asshole move. "It. Is unusual to take that step that quickly, especially when you had a legitimate opportunity to ask the detective on duty....that's me," Rosa offered, pointing to herself, just helping him out here, as much as she could, "by the way...about it, and you didn't. That is all I'm talking about here. Just trying to help you actually cover your ass.

"But," she said, "if that's how they do it where you're from, fine. Keep being super lame and half-assed and trigger happy, but you're doing all the paperwork for it, and I'm just going to kick back and laugh my ass off at the fallout."

"Are we?" snapped Rosa. "Because I thought it was pretty clear. But you've made it pretty obvious that you've got no interest in actually hearing what anyone other than an easy mark has to say around here."

"It's not about stepping on my toes, Williams," Rosa huffed, folding her arms in front of her. "These have steel, my toes are fine. It's about you coming in here and doing a shitty job. If you don't like insults to your integrity and person? Then do better."

Her eyes narrowed in a glower for a moment before she grunted faintly. "Now, if you'll excuse me," she said, "I just came in here to get this." At which point she lifted up the incredibly large knife she'd pulled out of her desk drawer, tucked it into a sheath somewhere mysteriously in those incredibly tight jeans, and started heading for the door.

"Nice chatting with you. Good luck on your investigation."
