Duke had just about managed to convince himself that everything was fine. All he had to do was wait for their usual lunch time, and Octavia would come in and do that little half-smile thing she did and he'd feel stupid for worrying. Or he'd go to the flower shop and she'd turn around and do that little not-quite-eyeroll thing and say her phone fell in a lake or got eaten by an alot or something.

And everything would be fine.

Lucifer couldn't lead with 'has Octavia finally returned'. That would give away the part where he was starting to get worried, and that couldn't possibly happen.

Duke pulled his phone out so fast he nearly fumbled it into a dirty dish bin. The disappointment he felt when it was Lucifer and not Octavia texting him was painful.

And still, the speed with which he answered Lucifer's text was probably telling in and of itself.
