The Perk- Monday morning

Rey had to go home for a bit and had the grand plan of getting a drink to go before finishing packing up and leaving voicemails for people so she'd be ready by this afternoon's portal.

And she'd do that!

But right now she was just casually twirling a lightsaber as she waited for her order. As you do.

And of course, since it was Monday, Shunsui actually had a convenient excuse ping everywhere to swing by the Perk to pick up the drinks that he brought with him for his students, but as he came in to sleepily place his usual order, he couldn't help but noticing Rey and regarding her twirling with dubious concern.

"Errrr...." he said, wondering if he should even say anything, "...do you think that's really safe, Rey-chan?"

"Why wouldn't it be?" Rey asked, frowning.

The lightsaber was suddenly gone, also.

"Weapons are not mere playthings, Rey-chan," said Shunsui, hanging his head and inexplicably sad about this. "Such power should be handled resposibly... and scarcely."

"I know what I'm doing," Rey said, resolutely, and also crying a little.

And Shunsui sat down, resigned, amongst a spot in the coffee shop that had been reduced to rubble and ruined and sighed, looking up at her was a small, tired smile.

"Of course you do....Rey-chan," he conceded.

"I know you know I do," Rey said, really appreciating his existence at this moment.

And how can an appreciation like that do anything but lift Shunsui's spirits right up, especially on this day, apparently New Year's Day, as that was what Shunsui was dressed and ready for, fluttering a red fan in front of his face and offering out a second.

"For you, Rey-chan ♥," he said, beaming at her. "You'll want a fan to celebrate with, neh ♥?"

"I can't, sorry," Rey said, since she was holding a lightsaber again.

"Tsch ♥." Shunsui clicked his tongue with amusement, closing his eyes in a serene smile. "Back to the weapon again, Rey-chan ♥?"

Duke was also pinging everywhere planning to just grab a quick coffee and then flee back to the relative safety of his ship. First, though, he apparently needed to make a phone call. While one of the baristas dangled upside down behind him.

“Rey,” he said. Not into the phone against his ear. “The island’s doing a thing.”

"I know," Rey said, looking thoughtful and a little sad about it. "I don't know what this one is."

"Oh goody!" Duke gave her a sarcastic double-thumbs up. "Something new and fun for both of us."

"It's a little interesting, though, isn't it?" she asked.

[betterthanaplan]

"No, Rey. No it's not."

Rey apparently thought the proper response to that was to reach out and grab her coffee with the Force.

Which Duke watched with a look of utter resignation.

"At least I'm not randomly wet again."

"Why would you be wet?" Rey asked, steely-serious,

[betterthanaplan]

"I don't know!" Duke said, scowling. "I just was! And then I was underwater, and then I was ten."

Even though he definitely had a class to get to, Shunsui couldn't help regarding Duke with a thoroughly unimpressed look.

"When is it not doing a thing?" he asked, even if he was not usually one to complain.

"When I can go get a coffee before class without transforming ten times and finding myself holding a variety of weapons."

"....that's fair," Shunsui allowed, somehow ever more miserable than a second ago and wishing he hadn't even asked.

"It is, thank you." Duke gave him a cheerfully sarcastic double thumbs up.

"'It is,'" Shunsui repeated after Duke in a mocking tone, making a face, "'thank you.'"

Which may have seemed immature, sure, but, we, he was ten.

"Oh yeah," Duke said, shaking his head. "This conversation's going to go great."

Shunsui grinned, breating a soft laugh, back to his usual age, albeit without an eye. "It does seem," he missed, "that certain forces beyond our control are coloring the mood of our interactions at an astonishing quick rate, Duke-san... "
