The Perk, Thursday Afternoon

With a cup of tea in front of her, and a book with pages smelling of mold, Lucille sat at a table by the window, occasionally throwing a glance at people passing by. Today she missed her house, and her brother, and even the housekeeper and her burnt food. The poor girl had been limping down the stairs and with the weakness from the poison in her tea all it had taken was a push, and she now rested, perhaps in peace, in one of the clay vats in the cellar. She had had enough money for Lucille to buy a piano, a shelf, and eventually some new books. All the girl had wished for was a respectable marriage.

That was the past. She shouldn't think of it. Fandom offered freedom, from convention, from a leaking house and from the clay pit that would eventually swallow it, unless the leaking roof would make it collapse first. Whichever way, all traces of her family would be cone, except for the graves.

She turned a page and took another sip of tea.

[Open. I love having Lucille back, which is probably obvious by now.]
