Danny was down to his last button down shirt as things just continued to freakin' disappear on him.

But not Steve! Who was here and it was mildly concerning to have him around all the weirdness.

"No, Haven," he snapped into the phone, frowning as a pearl mysteriously rolled off his desk, originating from the general vicinity of his pen holder. "Maine. No, I don't have more details than that."

He was multi-tasking his mother-hen routine.

It was hard to tell if Steve was wearing a shirt at all under his mud and multitudes of colored dye, even after a quick dip in the water.

"This place is great," he declared, dripping grossness all over the station floor.

"Seriously?!" Danny gestured at just all of him for doing this.

"What?" Steve asked. "You missed on some really great PT over in the park this morning."

[hatesparadise]

"No, I avoid it on purpose because it's clearly some sort of karmic punishment," Danny countered, hanging up the phone so he could find a goddamn mop to shove at Steve.

"Why would karma need to punish you, Danny?" Steve asked, leaning his muddy butt against Danny's desk.

Danny made a noise of absolute dismay. "You're an actual animal. I didn't miss you at all."

Steve grinned. "I'm sure. So this is where you work? With the guys with the helmets?"

"And I apparently also run the apartment building," he sighed, flicking Steve's shoulder to get him away from the desk.

Steve flicked pink-dyed mud at him in reply. "So you're a super?"

That would be handy if Steve planned on not living on Danny's couch.

He had a whole spare room, Steve! Sleeping on the couch was a You Thing here.

"Apparently," Danny said, settling against the desk a safe distance, but still too close for normal people. I've been informed these things happen here."

"That you show up and get jobs tossed at you when you arrive on the island?" Steve smirked. "Guess I'll see what I get. I've already met the mayor."

He'd met Mae, who was not at all the mayor.

"You met the mayor?" Danny had his doubts this place even had a mayor, honestly.

[grenadesandohana]

"Sure," Steve said. "The Lord High Master of all Fishes? Looks kinda like a cat?"

Oh right, his class sub. Who was insane.

"Steve, that is a student here."

[grenadesandohana]

"But it's a cat."

Who claimed to be the mayor. Apparently mayor was okay, student was strange.

[hatesparadise]

"You'd prefer a cat mayor to a student?" Danny had to ask. Was forced to ask.

Explain yourself, McGarrett.

[grenadesandohana]

"Well, cats are natural leaders," Steve said, "in addition to being tiny deadly ninjas, so sure, they could be mayors."

"Cats are the opposite of leaders," Danny said because this right here was some choice crazy talk. "Cats are loners. Aloof. Particular. Dogs work in a group. Cats do not."

Honestly, this wasn't that far out of the realm of their normal conversations.

"Dogs could be on the city council," Steve stipulated. "But the cat would run everything."

"What kind of crazy world are you coming up with here?"

[grenadesandohana]

"Ones where cats retake their rightful places as gods, Danno," Steve replied, grinning.

[hatesparadise]

"You're nuts. You've been here one day and you've already gone nuts," Danny grumbled, finding mud and dye on his one good shirt. The only one left. "And you owe me a new shirt."

"How do I owe you a new shirt?" Steve asked. "Just wash the shirt."

[hatesparadise]

"This was the only shirt I could even find," Danny grumbled. "Because apparently, this place just does this sometimes."

"Makes shirts disappear? That seems weirdly specific," Steve replied.
