The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

Maudlin wasn't a great mood with which to host an evening in a club. Lucifer had gone to Seivarden's in an attempt to disperse the last clouds of broodiness left over from the weekend, but it hadn't-- quite-- worked.

So fine. Tonight the club would host a disco-influenced pop-rock act instead of his work on the piano. The last thing he wanted to be caught dead with was repeats of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

But that left Lucifer lurking at the bar, glass in hand, watching the stage. At least the band drowned out the infernal cutesy muzak of the island.

All this cheery music wasn't horrible but Barry was in definite need of a break.

Plus if he was lucky a fox wouldn't show up and try to sell him artwork in here.

"Ah, if it isn't our returning alumni," Lucifer greeted, while Tiny busied himself with the actual act of making the drink. "Recovered a bit?"

"Well I have clean underwear and I don't feel like spouting all of my fucking inner thoughts every ten seconds," Barry replied. "But man the whole muzak out there makes even disco a welcome relief. How about you? Glad to have your wardrobe back?"

"Yes," Lucifer said, with feeling. "Do you have any idea how hard it was to get a suit in this fabric? Here--"

He held out his arm. "Feel it."

"Extremely expensive wool, yes," Lucifer said. And sighed. Loudly. "Almost no one on this island appreciates anything nice."

"Well the extremely expensive part was obvious," Barry said waving at the jacket and trousers. "Custom tailoring is hard to come by these days. It's a fantastic suit. I'm more of a lab jacket and t-shirt guy myself."

Lucifer made a frustrated noise in the back of his throat and pulled his arm away. "Explains the gimlet," he said. "You're a scientist, then?"

"Yeah. I'm a fucking genius," Barry replied in a blasé tone. "Been that way since the womb, blah, blah, blah. For the record? I don't wear expensive shit because working in a lab can be rough on a $2000 suit. And I don't know shit about drinking because this is a social exercise for me."

He nodded to the gimlet Tiny just provided.

"I mean the first time I had a fucking drink was at your party on Saturday. Duke Crocker made it for me."

The wholesomeness was starting to get to Silver a bit. He supposed some people might find it charming but to him it was just unsettling.

"Yes, I have been telling the band to play even louder," Lucifer sighed. "I'm beginning to consider wearing some of those noise-blocking headphones techies are always rambling about."

"I think they tend to put the emphasis on the burning, generally," Lucifer said. He shook his head, lifting his own glass. "Either way, the whole bloody muzak thing better come to an end sooner rather than later."
