Duke still wasn't sleeping super well. It turned out he couldn't go home, get throttled by his ex, and come back feeling 100%, no matter how hard he tried to force himself to.

So instead he threw himself into a cooking challenge.

"They're . . . donut holes," said Greg.

"No," said Duke. "They're malasadas."

"They look like donut holes."

"And yet they're still malasadas."

"I'm just saying, someone's going to wonder why we're making donut holes."

"Well, then you can tell them they're malasadas." Duke gave Greg a Look. "Isn't there some other thing you should be doing?"

"Nope."

"Oh good."

Well, at least there was someone who would loudly disagree that these were just donut holes. Because they weren't. They were better.

"Hey," Danny said, looking delighted for part of the menu.

"Here to make sure I made 'em right?"

Danny shrugged like 'eh' but was still pretty hyped to give them a try. "You had to do a theme with 'em, huh?"

"When the ocean gives you ono, you work with it," Duke said. "And you've really got to relax about Hawaiian culture, man, there's nothing wrong with it spreading to the mainland."

"The ocean did not give you pineapples," Danny pointed out.

“Think about where we are. How can you possibly be sure about that?”

Danny sighed and threw his hands up in the air. "Fine. Because this place is nuts."

"Yeah, but it's way less likely to try to kill me than my hometown is, so you know what, I'll take it."

Okay, that was fair. So far.

"Something happen?" Because he wasn't around to pester Haven PD into telling him things last weekend.

"You have ono?" Steve said, poking his head into the restaurant.

"I have ono," Duke confirmed. "Fresh caught this morning, even though we're way too far north for it. I've learned not to question it too much."

"It really has no business being on this coast at all," Steve agreed.

"I'm still waiting on the day I catch something that's meant to be extinct. My class had terror birds in it last spring."

"I'm afraid to ask, but--terror birds?" Steve asked.

"Giant prehistoric birds with axes for faces," Duke said. Look, that was an official description from paleontologists. Axes for faces. "I was teaching a bird-hat class."

"I'm going to circle back to the bird-hat class," Steve said. "Axes for faces?"

“Big ass, axe-like beaks,” Duke confirmed.

Apparently Thursday was now therapy day. They were still yet to figure out a good way for video calls, but last weekend's face-to-face had clearly been a good idea, because Octavia had actually managed some words, this week.

They'd talked more about her life before Fandom. And Claire had - correctly - taken note of how she skated past almost everything involving Bellamy.

Octavia was kind of exhausted now. And had more than one knife concealed on her as she entered the diner. The plan was to head out into the preserve, later.

Made sense to Duke. His own therapy day was very handwavily Monday, and he'd been hardpressed not to sail off or just throw himself into the water after his appointment this week.

"Hey, snogon. How's it going?"

Octavia actually headed straight for him instead of for one of the booths, this time. So that was probably a good sign, no matter how worn down she looked.

"Like I need to eat lunch and then go throw knives for the rest of the day?" she offered in a rasp.

And she was speaking in complete sentences! An excellent sign.

"Well, I can definitely help with the first part of that. That pineapple salsa came out really well."

"Don't know what that is," Octavia replied, "But I'm about to find out."

She also reached up for a quick kiss hello. Guess this was this week's take on her trying to ground herself.

Duke was not complaining. "Do you know what salsa is? Take that and add pineapple."

Okay, so maybe it wasn't a quick kiss. But also not the worst his staff had endured witnessing.

"Or I can just try it."

". . . Yeah," Duke said, teasing. "I guess we can let you try eating something you can't picture. Just this once."
