"She's been here the whole day so far."

"I know."

"And she hasn't said a word the entire time."

"I know."

"Do you think we should ask her? You know. About Duke?"

"Are you kidding? Didn't you see that Portalocity guy that came in day before last? Looked like he'd seen a ghost, or like the ghost of hims--"

"You guys know I can hear you, right?" Octavia drawled, dryly, from her seat in a corner booth, without lifting her gaze from her phone.

They didn't say much after that.

So radio was, well, radio. But it was enough to have Danny poke his head into the diner without even needing lunch in order to check in on some things.

The fact that it was Octavia and not Duke was enough to make him stop for a moment and consider it again.

Octavia couldn't help it: every time she heard the door, she looked up with a flicker of hope passing over her face. And every time, it was immediately replaced by a flicker of disappointment.

Which, this time, gave way to a faintly annoyed kind of resignation.

"No, he's not here."

"Noticed that," Danny replied, looking back at the kitchen staff like maybe they held any clues. Which was asking a lot, honestly. It was asking a lot of them. "He went back to Haven, yeah?"

The kitchen staff mostly held some moderate wariness regarding Octavia's presence here, and not much else, alas.

"Yeah," she replied, her voice dry and flat. "Then he said he'd have to stay longer, and then all lines of communication went down."

Danny hummed, turning away to consider that new information now. He hadn't gotten any 'Hey, so we arrested your CI' calls, so hopefully that boded well.

Or maybe that there was nothing to or from the place. Because this stupid island was like that.

"Seems to kinda be a thing around here."

Octavia was not going to entertain anything even remotely like small talk.

So, blunt it was: "You should probably try calling Nathan's dad." Some people would call him the Chief of police but Octavia was never going to bother. "Not that you're going to get through to him."

But she'd already tried calling everyone she could try to call, so.

Well, she was worried enough about it to talk say more on the subject. Which seemed out of character in his experience. "Sure, I'll try that."

At least see what he could figure out. Maybe give a go at getting off the island and see if that helped like it had for him the one time.

Octavia would have done anything for Duke. This was just proving that point.

Of course, now she just nodded. Looked at him for a few seconds longer, then looked back down at her phone.

"Right, nice chat," Danny replied dryly, giving the staff a little nod before heading back out to see what he could dig up there.

Octavia's eyes flicked up as he turned to go.

And then just watched him leave. What could he accomplish that she couldn't, anyway?
