Nina was apologizing a lot today. The big fern by Jesse's desk was dying, and so were the littler plants in the flowerpots throughout the building. "I just don't know what happened," she said, pouting. "I watered them this weekend!"

Jesse sighed, leaning over her desk to eye the fern. "Have you been talking to it?" she asked.

Nina blinked. "...What?"

"Have you talked to the plants," Jesse repeated.

"Uh," Nina said. "No. Why would I?"

Jesse shook her head and pushed her chair back. She got up, only to squat down by the fern. "Hey, little buddy," she said. "I know you're feeling a little sad right now, but I think you're doing your absolute best, okay? You're a good fern."

The leaves straightened a little. Jesse smiled, and got up, brushing past a perturbed-looking Nina into the hall. "Hi," she called. "You're a gardenia, right? I love your petals!"

Yes, she was absolutely going to spend her morning cheering up the plants. She'd kind of missed it.
