"Something's not right."

It'd been the second night of bad dreams in a row. Bad dreams that Jesse seemed to have a hard time shaking now, worse than yesterday. Like the memory of Dylan's face was chasing her, pulling her back in at the strangest times.

She'd been dealing with strangeness for long enough to know when something was off.

Anyway, that was why her desk at Town Hall was currently covered in binders and stacks of paper. "There's got to be something in here," she said, flipping through another binder. "Nobody's seen a giant singing fish, right?"

Nina shook her head.

"Fuck," Jesse said succinctly.

Some of her hair is coming out of that ponytail.

So his early morning wake up call meant that Barry had more time on his hands which apparently meant looking at various city codes which led to him realizing he had some paperwork to do.

"Excuse me," he said knocking on the door. "Are you the mayor? I got a permit issue I need to deal with."

"Yes, I'm the mayor," Jesse said, picking up one piece of paper and helplessly moving it to another binder. "Come on in!"

"Thanks. I'm Barry Ween. I have a warehouse I'm using in the district that I use on a regular basis for scientific research," He said pulling his backpack off his shoulder. "Annnnnnd I'm betting I need a permit for this."

Pulling out what appeared to be a large battery he placed it on her desk.

"It's a nuclear reactor. I use it to power some of my equipment."

Jesse looked up from her papers, saw the reactor, and didn't even blink. "Is that at risk of blowing a hole in another dimension or something like that?" she said.

"Well, there's always a risk. But I wouldn't be carrying around in a fucking backpack if I didn't think it was negligible." Barry said honestly. "I assume there's a fuck ton of paperwork I need to fill out."

"Sure," Jesse said, poking around her desk for a second before she found-- "Oh, it's in the cabinet," she said absently, pulling out a stack of forms.

She held it out for Barry. "Just make sure you get all of its properties on there," she said. "The free spaces are for contingencies. You know, if it decides to become sentient or something."

"Man, it's so fucking nice when people don't lose their shit over things like this," Barry said gratefully taking the forms. "Quick question though. What's the deal with Skywalker's name out on the whiteboard?"

"There's something weird going on and I'm just eliminating past weird from the options list," Jesse said, sighing as she looked at the board.

"Huh. That time of year again?" Barry asked. "Well, if it's any help I monitor environmental shit all over the island. Nothing weird is fucking going on there unless is something magic."

"You're a science guy," Jesse realized, looking up at him.

If she couldn't reach Emily...

"One of several on the island," Barry admitted. "Why? Need somethingn in particular?"

"Just thinking I could use a science guy," Jesse admitted, "If you're willing to be deputized." Beat. "Just so we can coordinate scans, you can keep me updated on the research when things go funny, stuff like that."

"Deputize?"

Huh.

"Usually the government is trying to lock me up. Not ask for my help. It's a nice fucking change of pace. Sure, I can help. It's not like I'm going to be sleeping anytime soon."

"Just consider me the new generation of government," Jesse said dryly, for more reasons than one. "Do you have anything that can scan for psychic interference?"

"Yeah, but I've got it back in my home dimension. I can get it here by tomorrow though," Barry replied. "Anything specific you think I need to be looking for?"

"A wave of nightmares?" Jesse said wryly. "That's as close as I've gotten."

"Yeah. Had my share of those this morning," Barry admitted as he put his battery back in place and pulled out a pad of paper and started scribbling his contact information. "You learn anything else that might narrow it down a bit, leave a message and I'll see what I can figure out."

Unlike the previous mayor, this one seemed actually interested in, well. Mayor-ing. Which, in Fandom, included things like being proactive whenever something funny was going on ~~to steal a line from the OCD thread below this one~~. Or so Liam hoped, anyway. So after the encounter with Danny at the Station, Liam stormed over to the Town Hall.

It also might be noted that despite the weather, he was clad head-to-toe in black (well, okay, that part was fairly typical) long sleeves and leather gloves. A precaution that had proved useless in the end, as it happened.

"Jesse," he greeted with a nod. "We've got a problem."

"Yeah," Jesse said, looking up from the absolute mess of papers on her desk. "I'm trying to figure out exactly what."

"A lot of people have been having nightmares the last couple nights," Liam said. Not exactly strange in a place like Fandom, which seemed to collect the traumatized. Not to mention did a fairly good job of inflicting new trauma. "But it's not just dreams. Happened to me a few times when I was awake, too.

"I felt like something has been haunting me all day," Jesse admitted. "So that's not just... left-over nightmare gunk?"

"I might have thought so, if it hadn't- look, have you touched anyone else, the last couple days?"

Long pause. "That sounds kind of shamey," she said slowly, "But no."

He gave her a sheepish little smile, acknowledging the awkwardness of his wording. "Touching someone else seems to... transmit them. The flashbacks."

Hence the long sleeves and gloves, for all the good those precautions had ended up doing.

"Well, that's..." Awkward. "...A problem," Jesse said. "I should put that up on the board."

There's a big white board sitting in the main hall. Currently it has a single sheet of paper attached to it with a magnet, reading BILLY? with a red line through it, and underneath it ANAKIN SKYWALKER ACCOUNTED FOR?.
