Luke's Diner, Saturday

[what_the_shock]

No extra animals this week, no being stuck in some weird other New York. Miguel was back at the diner and...rather relieved, really.

He headed straight for the coffee pot, got it brewing, then checked in with the cook.

"...are those a thing?"

"They are now."

Miguel shrugged, added his own contribution, and put out the specials board.

So after being gone last weekend and finally not having any immediate responsibilities back home or around town, Miles decided to drop in and check on one of the many spider-People he had met the week before.

Entering the restaurant he headed to the counter. “How authentic are those huevos rancheros?”

"Mexican," Miguel said. "By way of Nueva York. Hey, Miles. Everything turn out okay?"

“According to Mr. Ween the Multi-Verse continues to spin. And my version of Brooklyn is still standing and the man who killed my uncle is in jail,” Miles said. “I got a lucky punch in on Kingpin when he was distracted. How are you doing? Any more glitches?”

"I think you can count that as a win," Miguel said. "No glitches here, happily. You going for the eggs, then?"

"Yeah, I'm in for the eggs," Miles said cheerfully. "Though I doubt it would top my mom's. She's a stickler for making it fresh."

"Here you're just lucky if the eggs are from Earth," Miguel said, putting in the order. His were better, but he was sure the cook could do a good enough job. "We've gotten some that were purple. You want something to drink with that? Coffee's decent, tea's okay, and there's hot chocolate, milk, juice, and sodas."

There was a part of Miles who wanted to go for the coffee but honestly he hadn't developed a taste for it. "Uh. Milk I guess," he said, leaning against the counter. "And after the last few weeks I think I could handle alien or purple eggs as long as nothing bursts out of my chest later."

Miguel snorted. "Nah, they just taste a bit weird." He went to get the milk and poured Miles a glass, sliding it over to him.

"It's all pretty ridiculous when you're just starting out, huh?" He offered him a sympathetic shrug. "One day you're normal, the next the world is stupid."

"Stupid is a word for it. Endlessly complicated is how it felt to me," Miles admitted. "I'm just glad when I found out about my powers it was here and not at my old school. That would have been hard to explain."

"Are superpowers a big thing in your universe?" Miguel asked. "Common, I mean?"

"Not really," Miles said with a shrug. "I mean I've gone my entire life not seeing anyone with powers or even an epic superhero-supervillain battle before last week. Even then the only heroes I know of is Spider-Man and Tony Stark."

[what_the_shock]

"That's your Peter Parker, right?" Miguel asked. "I met one before all this. He was a good guy."

"Yeah," Miles said frowning a bit. "It's weird. I knew the guy for like... five minutes and suddenly I feel this huge obligation to him."

He sighed. "Did anyone ever lay that great powers, great responsibility line on you?"

Miguel snorted. "My brother said his girlfriend says that. I told him she reads too many fortune cookies."

Miles chuckled. "My dad swears it's 'With great ability comes great accountability'."

[what_the_shock]

"Yeah, in my experience, with great ability comes zero accountability. Especially if that ability comes with money."

Who, him? Cynical?

"It's a nice thought, though."

The eggs came up, and Miguel passed them over to Miles.

"Your family know about you yet?"

Miles shook his head as he picked up his fork. "Nah. My dad was never a big fan of Spider-Man," Miles explained,"He's a cop and never really approved of him. Said he was just a vigilante causing problems. He saw me battling Kingpin and changed his stance a little but... I think for my safety and my family it's best I keep my identity a secret in my world."

"Probably best, but they could be more likely to figure things out than you think," Miguel said. "It's good to be careful."

He shrugged and sipped his coffee. "And it's not the end of the world if they figure it out, either. Just so long as ones trying to kill you don't."
