Trooper Station | Saturday

The adrenaline of a fight followed quickly by the need to look cool in front of Annie had made it so Diego hadn't really noticed that he had been punched in the face and slammed into a wall until Friday morning. Then he really, really noticed it. He had spent most of yesterday in bed, which was something he was not proud of.

He was still walking stiffly when he came into work, shaking candy corn out of his hoodie and getting it everywhere. The troopers knew better than to comment about that or about the faint bruise on his face.

He carefully sat down at his desk and didn't even have a second to get comfortable before the goddamn cat was in his lap. He didn't have it in him to pretend to be annoyed about it.

Like Steve had better things to do on Saturdays but stop by the office.

"Wow," he commented wryly. "Who'd you piss off? Was it that cop in Baltimore? Because we can go do something about it."

Ex-judicial retaliation, Steven. How by-the-book of you.

"No, not a cop," Diego said. "Just a misunderstanding, it's all sorted out now."

"Okay," Steve said, taking him at his word. "Is this where we both aggressively ignore how it's raining candy out there or--"

"I kind of assumed it was normal for this place?" Diego said. "I wish it was something less disgusting than candy corn."

"Could be worse," Steve said. "It could've been Bit o' Honey--those would hurt."

[knife_bender]

“Also gross.” Sorry, Annie. “I’d be okay with, like, Rolos or something.”

"I could eat some Rolos," Steve agreed. "I'll eat most stuff that's free food, but unwrapped candy from the sky's where I'm gonna draw the line."

“Agreed,” Diego said with a nod. “Hey do you have any idea how to get this cat to leave you alone?”

"Aww, she likes you too?"

Steve tried not to be jealous of that and was failing miserably. "I thought she just liked me."

“I don’t want her to like me,” Diego said. “She’s all yours.”

If it hadn’t taken him so long to sit down in the chair with minimal pain he would have made more of an attempt to push the cat off. As it was he was going to live in this chair until the cat decided to go.

Which he hoped happened before the end of his shift.

Steve tsked for the kitty, who was supremely uninterested. "I think Danny has cat bribes around here somewhere," he said, digging through desk drawers like a person with no sense of personal property.

“I hope he refilled his desk after my brother cleared it out.” He did not think Klaus was above stealing cat treats.

"Your brother ate cat bribes?" Steve asked.

[knife_bender]

“I don’t know if he ate them,” Diego said. “...well maybe if he was drunk and he’s usually drunk, so.”

"Huh," Steve said. "That's definitely a choice."

Diego nodded. "One of many questionable ones Klaus has made over the last three decades."

Steve gave up on finding treats in Danny's desk and reached into his own desk instead, pulling out a catnip toy shaped like a ninja.

"You're spoiling this cat," Diego said, wincing as he tried to push her off. "Look, kitty, he's got gifts for you."

"It's important to me that she likes me more than Danny," Steve said. "You sure you good? Need aspirin?"

[knife_bender]

"I think I'm loaded up to capacity," Diego said, finally managing to get the cat out of his lap. "Just a tip, probably wise to ask a question or two before starting a fight 'cause they might have superpowers."

"They had the power of punching really hard?" Steve guessed.

[knife_bender]

"Among other things," Diego said with a nod. "Also impervious to knives."

[grenadesandohana]

"Well, that's just not fighting fair," Steve said. "Speaking of which, watch out for blond Steve on morning runs. He'll just blow past you like you're standing still and laugh about it."

McGarrett was so bitter about it.

[knife_bender]

"That's just obnoxious," Diego said, like he wouldn't do the same thing if he had the skills to do so. "One of my brothers would pull crap like that back in the day."

Only Five could actually teleport so he wasn't even showing athleticism which was even more annoying.

"It's just uncalled for," he said like he didn't do the same thing to the Troopers.
