Duke had been planning to catch up on some paperwork today.

"The hell are you doing out here?" he asked Ali. "Don't you have, you know, work to do?"

"Dishwasher's full of spiders," Ali said, heading to the lunch counter.

"What?"

Ali pulled a pistol out of what was apparently a fake napkin dispenser. "Dishwasher's full of spiders," he said again. And headed back into the kitchen.

Duke stared after him for a moment, then jumped up and hurried to the kitchen. "Why do you need a gun for spiders?!"

Luke's was open. And mostly not full of spiders.

The diner was mostly not full of spiders also because Octavia slipped in somewhere around lunch time.

And was now feasting on every spider she could find, yes.

Gona gonna gona, even in raccoon form.

"You look pleased with yourself," Duke said, when he noticed her scurrying around.

Octavia chittered up at him, briefly.

Then she saw another spider in a corner, and pounced for it.

"This is the reason why ships of old kept cats," Duke said, watching her hunt. "I suppose you're at least getting protein."

She really did look like she was living her best life, didn't she?

Octavia scurried about some more, watching for movement and -- ooooh there was a big, juicy one right over there!

"You know, I'm kind of jealous," Duke mused. He was aware he was talking mostly to himself, yeah. "I mean, it's just so much simpler. Look for food. Look for somewhere to live. No society pressures telling you you should want something more." He thought back and shrugged. "Not that I miss the whole 'hunt for food and shelter' thing."

Octavia did not understand the noises he was making. So, it was purely a coincidence that she decided to bring the next spider she caught over to him.

Look, it didn't seem like he was fending so well for himself even though the prey was bountiful.

"Um," Duke said. "Thank you?"

And now she was looking up at him, expectantly.

And then down at the spider.

Yes.

"Am I anthropomorphizing, or do you actually expect me to eat that?"

Octavia held the spider further up, pinched between her little hands. The legs were still wriggling.

He wasn't catching his own!

“It’s a very nice spider,” Duke told her. “Please put it out of its misery.”

Octavia looked up at him for a moment longer, then looked down and brought the spider up to her own mouth for a quick bite.

The legs were no longer moving when she held the spider out again. Maybe he just wasn't too good at killing his own food yet!

"Oh my god, you're disgusting," Duke said. And reached for a napkin. This was probably going to keep going until he gave in, wasn't it.

Or until she decided he just didn't feel like surviving. Yeah.

She hadn't given up just yet, anyway.

Duke used the napkin to very carefully take the no-longer-whole spider. "Thanks, hon. You're the sweetest. Mmm, spider."

He would be discretely disposing of it as soon as he could.

Octavia seemed pleased enough that he'd taken it in the first place, anyway.

She was already scurrying away after another spider.

And the moment she was no longer looking, Duke was pitching that spider away with a little squeal of disgust.

Duke was getting a picture of two different, ridiculously expensive bottles of bourbon.

Yeah, Lucifer figured this was less pathetic than showing up to the diner in the flesh, and also, Duke could be a bit of an alcohol snob, which was something he'd like to encourage.

Lucifer was making it harder to avoid using the D word with regards to this -- gig.

Lucifer was also getting a tiny texted video of Octavia chewing with a bit of cobweb dangling off her chin. Because if Duke had to witness this, so did Lucifer.

Don't be weird, Duke. If Lucifer could resist inviting himself over to the Rouge for drinks every night this week, you could call a gig a gig.

... look, and also, shut up.

well now that's just what we call getting greedy, Lucifer texted, and then followed that up with, I approve, and finally, how many has she murdered?

haven't been tracking. But apparently they're hiding from her in the dishwasher.

He was very happy not to have heard any gunshots yet.

Duke looked up from his phone. "Lucifer's proud of you, Tavi."
