Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Sunday

There was some discount Halloween candy on sale on the concessions counter at the movie theater today, and it was bringing back some memories of days long past down at Wonka's, which -- Yeah, he was kind of trying not to think about it too much.

... He was thinking about it so much that it took him well into the day to even notice what feature they were advertising in the lobby today.

"Ingrid, uh, isn't that a Christmas flick?"

Ingrid, very chipper, replied, "It sure is!"

Her tone did not make Bucky want to question it any further than that.

Jesse hadn't seen much activity at the theatre in a while. She'd been lowkey worried.

But don't tell him that.

"Skipping right ahead to the end of the year, huh?" she said, as soon as she spotted James. "I'd make fun of you, but I'm not sure I can blame you right now."

"Not my doing," Bucky said, with a very small nod towards where Ingrid was... God, she wasn't already hanging up Christmas garlands, was she?

Ingrid gave Jesse a cheerful wave.

"Oof," Jesse said, pulling a face. She gave Ingrid a little wave, then took a few steps so she was closer to James and could lower her voice as she said, "You've got a Christmas-zilla in the house, huh."

"Apparently," Bucky said, his lips curling just a little. Had he told them to do that? Reflex, maybe. "But we still got Halloween candy, too."

"Good," Jesse said, mouth also curving. "Because I missed the party last night."

Or hadn't gone because going just seemed like a painfully awkward thing to do.

"There was a party?"

Like he paid attention.

(He did, though. Because of Steve reasons.)

"Yeah, some big Halloween party at Caritas," Jesse said. "Kitty was pretty all over about it."

She shrugged. "Not really my thing," she admitted. "But I can do Halloween candy over a Christmas movie, if you're interested."

Bucky felt like his little answering shrug should have been more stilted than it was. Less easy. "Haven't actually seen this one before," he admitted. "Don't think."

He hadn't really seen anything from past going in the ice for the first time.

"Do we have to have the talk again about how it's probably good to know what you're screening?" Jesse teased, smiling at him. "I mean, what if she secretly programmed a horror movie?"

Bucky's snort was soft. Half surprised him.

"Then, I guess we'd be watching a horror movie."

"I won't tell anyone if you get scared," Jesse teased.

Wait, is that too much? Quick, segue to something else.

"So... I guess I'm buying us some candy."

She was talking to Bucky Barnes. And not the version who'd actually been good at interacting with other humans.

It was fine, was what the narrative was getting at.

His lips quirked again. "Half-buying." A beat - though the timing was a little awkward. (See?) "'Cause it's half-off."

Lame.

Jesse let out a little snort of a laugh. "Okay, half-buying," she corrected. "Got any favorites?" she added, stepping up to the counter.

"Candy corn's a classic," Bucky offered. He had no real opinion - in part because he was actively trying to avoid the part of his brain that did.

"I'm sure it's all good, though," he added, after a pause. Just a little awkward, leaning against the counter with one gloved hand.

"Well, you're selling it," Jesse pointed out, a little amused, as she picked out a few bags of candy. "Of course you think so. Actually, next time, leave off the 'I'm sure', that sells it harder."

Bucky's expression went faintly wry as he looked down, nudging some of the chocolate bars back into a neater pile. "Never was much of a salesman."

Direct lie.

"I'm not exactly an expert either," Jesse said, laughing softly. She put down some chocolate bars, some candy corn and some bags of assorted stuff. "I mean. Definitely liked my janitor job better than the customer-facing stuff."

Bucky glanced up again, though it was more through his lashes than it was with his head.

"Where were you a janitor?"

"Colorado," Jesse said, "And Connecticut."

Beat.

"I guess c-states are just my janitor states."

Bucky smiled a little. "Never been to either of those." Lie. "So I can only guess if there's maybe something that really needs janitors, there."

He looked down at her selection of candy.

"You good with these?"

"Unless you changed your mind about the candy corn," Jesse said, grinning a little. "And everywhere needs janitors. People just don't see us most of the time."

"Some people like it that way," Bucky said, idly, as he rang up her purchases.

Did he mean the people who didn't see, or the people who were not seen?

Even he wasn't sure.

She had.

Jesse shrugged one shoulder and grinned merrily. "I never said they didn't," she said.

"Observation, not argument," Bucky replied mildly. (Bordering on soft, but let's not talk about it.)

Then he rattled off her total.

Jesse put some money on the counter with a smile. She waited until he'd put that away before she offered him a bag of candy corn. "Not-an-argument peace offering?" she teased.

An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

Fun fact: I have never actually seen this movie, even though it airs here every year, too.

Also major SP warning. For, like, the next several weeks still.
