Elsewhere and then the Causeway, later Sunday evening

Allie was enjoying the clear night air as she made her way down the long-abandoned highway towards Old DC. It had been nearly a year since she’d last visited Azura’s city, and if Allie was honest with herself, she’d missed the Vampire Prince. They’d developed a grudging respect for one another in the years since the first time Allie had shown up with a package of the vaccine against Rabidism that had been developed in Eden.

The sudden glimpse of light through the trees was not exactly unexpected. Allie had looked for it every time she’d traveled this way for the last six years. But she wasn’t willing to get her hopes up. Not yet. Not until she could be sure. Jumping gracefully over the concrete barrier on the side of the road, she started making her way towards the light.

The trees thinned out and Allie stopped as the path she’d followed through the woods ended at a causeway that stretched towards a familiar island. Allie shifted the sword slung over her shoulder as she debated what to do. The last time she’d crossed to the island she’d been trapped there, cut off from her world and the people that needed her for years. A lucky break with a sympathetic Portalocity representative had finally gotten her back where she was needed, but only at the cost of being cut off from the friends she’d made in Fandom.

Was it worth crossing and being cut off again? Allie had done what she could to spread the news of the vaccine. Most of the Vampire Princes in the Northeast had been given samples of the vaccine and instructions on how to create more. Kanin and Zeke were dead. Jackal was still in Europe. Caleb and Bethany were safe in Eden. Azura might spare her a thought at some point but she wouldn’t shed any blood tears if Allie never came back. But six years had passed in her world since she’d last been on the island. Allie had no idea how much time had passed in Fandom. Would anyone remember her? Would her friends still be there?

In the end, it really wasn’t a hard decision. Her steps determined, Allie strode across the causeway and stepped onto the island.

There were still no defenses to protect the island. Nothing to keep rabids at bay, nothing to stop a mob of raiders, or a vampire with evil intentions. Allie had been shocked by that the first time she’d come to Fandom. Now she smiled, remembering some of the islands more unique residents and the way they’d defended the island when needed.

“Welcome back,” she said to herself.
