The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

Lucifer was still in an eighties groove this month, for whatever reason. So visitors coming in early to the Devil's Nest were going to be regaled by the likes of Take on Me by the Devil behind the piano.

He stopped his set somewhat early when the urge to slip into some Radiohead reared its ugly head. He was nipping that in the bud, thank you.

Still, it wasn't a terrible week so far, was it?

Be glad he cut that 'Paranoid Android' off at the pass.

Wherever he's chilling right now.

"I would not have pegged you for a New Wave fan," Duke said, taking up his usual spot leaning against the piano. He set a fresh drink down for him. "Can we get some Flock of Seagulls next?"

"You know if you missed the open ocean, you could have just stayed on your boat instead of tempting me with the opportunity for relentless 80s nautical puns," Lucifer said, tapping a few cheery keys on the piano and looking up at Duke with a smirk.

"Maybe I missed some 80s nautical puns," Duke said cheerfully. "Actually, in this era I was way more into The Cure than Flock of Seagulls."

He was still into the Cure, let's be real.

"Did you grow your hair out all dark and go full goth?" Lucifer asked, amused. "You know less is more with eyeliner."

... okay, sometimes he did like to go 'more' with eyeliner.

"Yeah, 'cause I could afford eyeliner," Duke said, rolling his eyes. "I was not all 'dark and tortured'. I did have long hair, though." He looked into the distance with a smile. "Was always more punk than goth, but Robert Smith. . . ." He clicked his tongue. "He got me."

Lucifer looked at him, mouth curving into something much lighter than his previous smirk.

He shook it off a moment later, and reached for his glass. "Any particular favorites?"

"Well, I'd hate to bring down the mood of the night." A lot of the Cure was very depressing, let's be real. "But 'Doing the Unstuck' was always a personal favorite."

"And you mock me for thinking you might have been a broody teenager," Lucifer teased. "Could've picked a more piano-friendly one, but..."

He could find the basic riff on the keys just fine.

"...at least you're not asking me to play grunge. One go at Jane's Addiction was bad enough."

"Hey, I like the occasional Jane's Addiction," Duke said. "Especially when Octavia's singing it."

Been Caught Stealing was basically one of Their Songs.

Lucifer snorted. "Well, she made me play some," he said. "At least something vaguely piano-friendly."

He kept idly pressing the keys of the piano, finding something close to the right melody for that Cure song.

“What exactly makes a song ‘piano friendly’?” Duke asked.

"Constantly repeating chords and grunting isn't exactly the most fascinating thing in the world to translate to piano, is it?"

“Pretty sure there’s no grunting in Doing the Unstuck,” Duke pointed out.

"And you'll notice I'm trying to play it, it's hardly grunge," Lucifer said, amused. "Or are you trying to convince me to sing as well?"

“I’d love to hear you sing,” Duke said, more honestly than he’d intended. He took a quick sip of his drink to cover. “Even if you do end up grunting.”

Lucifer's mouth quirked a little. "As you wish," he said, sincere.

Music was his language, after all.

He found a decent approximation of those swift 80s chords, laying a bit of the vocal line over it to keep it interesting. He leaned in to the microphone. "It's a perfect day for letting go, for setting fire to bridges, boats, and other dreary worlds you know... let's get happy."

Duke grinned, absolutely delighted to hear Lucifer singing one of his old favorite songs. He couldn’t stop himself from singing along — not that he really tried.

“It's a perfect day for making out
To wake up with a smile
Without a doubt
To burst grin giggle bliss skip jump sing and shout
Let's get happy!”

Lucifer shot him an incredibly amused look. At first, anyway. It was rather hard not to include someone in a musical performance when they were already lobbing themselves into it.

He put on just the twist of a funny voice, and continued, "'But it's much too late' you say, 'For doing this now, we should have done it then...'"

It was rather upbeat for a Cure song, wasn't it? Kind of fun on the piano now that he'd gotten the jist of it down. He grinned at Duke, and lapsed into the near-staccato of,

"Well it just goes to show
How wrong you can be
And how you really should know
That it's never too late
To get up and go..."

It was almost aggressively upbeat. Defiantly. That was what Duke loved about it. Screw whatever brought you down, just get happy!

Though he’d maybe taken the whole ‘burn everything down and leave’ theme a little too literally as a teen.

He bopped his head and swung his hips a little, then let himself actually dance through the musical break between verses. And maybe hamming it up just a little; he liked that amused look.

Made him laugh, actually, even if it was a short thing. "Ladies and gentlemen, a white human man dancing without doing a poor attempt at the robot or making an arse of himself," he told the microphone. "Miracles never cease."

He was having fun with that musical break, though.

Up early because today is going to be A Day.
