The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

"Please tell me you weren't a child as well," Lucifer sighed. "If so, I dodged a bullet."

Tiny grunted the grunt of a man who did not want to discuss it, whatever it was, if there was even an 'it' to begin with.

"Fair enough."

At least tonight's piano theme had very little to do with childhood.

And deal with Tiny instead of the Devil at the piano.

Why not both? Octavia ordered a cocktail from Tiny, then watched keenly as he made it, making a mental note to maybe make one tomorrow night during her own shift.

Then she waited for Lucifer to finish his latest stint at the piano.

For dancing or listening to.

At the piano, or at the bar.

Octavia's choice was damn near always 'at the bar', and tonight was no different.

She lifted her Jack Rose in greeting when he came by. "Hey."

"A cocktail night for you?" Lucifer asked, settling against the bar with his own dirty martini.

Octavia looked at her glass.

Then back at him, with her perfect deadpan. "Thought this was a bottle of beer."

"Obfuscating stupidity, the lowest rank of sarcasm," Lucifer sighed. "It's merely been a while, that's all."

"It'll be longer again if you make a big deal about it," Octavia drawled, mostly joking.

Not that the average person would be able to tell.

"I really don't particularly care what you drink, as long as you're enjoying it," Lucifer said dryly.

"Mm."

She was going to sip it now, yes.

Lucifer shook his head and sighed. "I heard you found Duke this weekend," he said.

"Technically, he found me," Octavia rasped, setting the glass against the bar and twisting it between her fingers. "At the Rouge."

"So you went where you could be found," Lucifer said. "Clever."

Octavia shrugged a little. "Sometimes the most obvious strategy is the best," she said. "And Duke always ends up by the water, eventually."

And she'd wanted to make sure he knew there was food and shelter for him there when he did.

"I did try to tell him he had a boat," Lucifer said.

Well, shouted it out the door.

"Either way, it sounds like all was well in the end."

Octavia nodded. "We had a decent time of it."

Even with the crying.

Lucifer sipped his martini. "Now let's hope this never happens again," he muttered.

"Don't waste your hopes, this is Fandom."

Where things like this happened practically by the calendar.

"Well perhaps next year I'll just take a vacation for the entire month of January," Lucifer said peevishly.

... if he was still here by then.

It was probably for the best he hadn't said that last part out loud.

(Octavia wouldn't admit to thinking it anyway.)

"What, was it really that hard to stay cooped up in your house for a weekend?"

"The invader was inside my house," Lucifer pointed out.

"For about fifteen minutes, as far as I can tell."

"It was harrowing," Lucifer agreed.

"It was Duke."

"A small child who stole almost everything in my hallway that wasn't nailed down."

"Duke," Octavia repeated. "I don't understand how that doesn't make a difference."

Mind you, she also didn't understand his extreme dislike of kids to begin with.

"I called you, didn't I?" Lucifer retorted, sipping his martini. "He woke up and immediately started rifling through all of my cabinets."

Octavia suppressed a sigh and shook her head as she picked up her drink again.

"Okay."

It was pretty clear she didn't approve.

Lucifer eyed her. "Well I couldn't exactly pour him a bourbon and tell him to sit down and wait it out, could I?" he said. "Not that he would, he was mostly running a lot."

"I don't care about that part," Octavia said, milder now. "You wanna overreact to the kid thing when all you had to deal with was someone stealing from you, be my guest."

Lucifer's eyes rolled up towards the ceiling, and he took a big gulp of his drink.

But he left it at that.

Octavia took a sip from her glass.

Then another, longer one.

Lucifer waved at Tiny for a fresh drink while he considered what to change the topic to, since she clearly wasn't going to agree with him on this one.

Octavia was mulling something over, too.

But not a change of topic.

"When I said it went decent," she rasped after a moment, "I didn't mean it was easy."

"Right," Lucifer said, glancing her way again.

(Tiny replaced the drink in his hand with a new one as he did so.)

Octavia looked over at him, exasperated but in a muted, resigned sort of way.

"So the 'I'm going to run away for all of January over a fifteen-minute event' thing sounds extra dumb when some of us actually dealt with the entire weekend."

"Which you wouldn't have had to if we'd just all run away for January," Lucifer pointed out.

Well, he had a point there.

Octavia's gaze dropped back down to her glass.

"But I don't want to run away."

"It's not running away, it's a vacation," Lucifer said. "Running away involves not coming back. It's not like there's some deep, important lesson to be learned in..." He waved a hand. "...suddenly having to deal with a bloody toddler."

"You called it running away two seconds ago," Octavia pointed out. She didn't really want to touch the rest.

So she drank the last of her drink in one gulp, instead.

"It was a figure of speech," Lucifer sighed. "Why would you want to stick around for all of this?"

Because sometimes she was a masochist?

Or because sometimes there was worth to be found in spending your weekend with a younger version of the person who mattered to you the most, heartbroken you couldn't actually do anything to help the kid he'd been.

"Never mind, Lucifer," Octavia said, setting the empty glass on the counter. She caught Tiny's eye and shook her head. "Hope your next weekend's better."

Lucifer sighed. "Octavia," he said.

He was just not equipped to understand this one.

No, he was not. And Octavia knew it.

Should have known about five minutes ago already, to be honest.

"I think I'm gonna go."
