The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

"I wasn't going to ask you about your weekend."

Tiny did not look convinced.

"What, it's not like I want you to ask about mine, either."

Now he just looked sort of unimpressed.

Octavia rolled her eyes. "Whatever, let's just go over how to make a Jack Rose again, okay."

The Devil's Nest was open. Hope you liked applejack-based cocktails.

Duke, for one, absolutely enjoyed applejack-based cocktails.

He was here as promised after his class, sliding onto a bar stool across from her. "So. Let's get one of those delightful pink things."

Octavia's lips quirked. Or maybe they had already done that when she'd seen him come through the door.

She reached for a glass. "Coming right up."

Duke leaned both elbows on the bar and watched her. "How's your night going?"

"Better, now."

That wasn't a come-on, just a genuine observation. (Although, why not both?)

Thanks to he earlier practice, she had everything at hand for another Jack Rose. Easy to start working on it. "It's quiet, but it usually is."

"The joys of a bar in the middle of the week," Duke said. He liked watching her work here, seeing the slow increase of confidence as she handled the bottles, the glassware. "Asked the students tonight what they'd put into a go-bag to prep for people turning into kids. First answer? A childproof flask."

Lucifer would be kind of proud of Faye for that one, wouldn't he.

Octavia snorted as she measured the applejack into a shaker. She was definitely starting to seem more comfortable with a jigger, though she wasn't as quick yet as some.

The grenadine followed suit.

"Are these people veterans, or just quick to learn?"

"Pretty sure that one's new," Duke said. "Haven't seen her around before, anyway. She might show up on the docks sometime. Seems to like boats."

"Hm."

Now, here came Octavia's favorite part: squeezing some fresh lemon juice.

"Well, I'll keep an eye out."

Duke nodded. "So. You ready for our trip?"

"Just about," Octavia replied lightly. Maybe a little distractedly - sorry, smelling the lemon after squeezing the juice out was an important part of the process.

(Look. This was a good fruit day for her.)

"Might need to get something tomorrow, but I'll be done by the time you're ready to leave the diner."

"Last minute shopping, huh?" Duke teased. "Should I be excited?"

Snort. Sort of wry, as she went to shake the drink to chill it. "Probably not the way you're thinking."

"Ah. Not sexy-excited, then." Duke made his face go very serious. "Good to know."

Octavia's expression just slid more wry. "I don't know how to buy sexy by myself."

It sounded like a quip, but was mostly true.

Duke nodded, as though giving that serious consideration. "You're probably better off stealing sexy anyway."

Another huff, and Octavia was straining the drink into a glass.

"And how does that work, hm?"

"Well. Stealing is inherently sexy."

"Well, I don't think I know how to do that either," Octavia informed him. One last lime garnish later, she slid the drink across the bartop to him. "But here you go."

"I know you're not trying to tell me you don't know how to steal things," Duke scoffed. He accepted the drink and took a sip, closing his eyes to savor it. "Delicious. An absolute masterstroke."

"I haven't needed to steal anything in a long time," Octavia shrugged, leaning against the bar with both hands now. "Least of all anything sexy."

It was kind of a vague concept, anyway.

"But thanks."
