The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

Lucifer supposed this moment had been inevitable. That it should have happened to him... some time.

He'd just thought it would be longer.

But no. Tiny was behind the piano, his piano, tapping keys in a maddeningly familiar melody.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified...

Lucifer sped forward and slammed his hand down on the keys. Almost violently. "No," he snapped.

Tiny shot him a funny look, but scampered away. Lucifer adjusted his jacket and pulled a face. "Never again," he muttered. "Never again."

Lucifer is doing nothing but playing the best of Billy Joel tonight in punishment.

Never. Again.

Lucille arrived just in time to see Tiny's attempt at borrowing the piano.

"I didn't know he played," she said, amused.

"He doesn't," Lucifer said, annoyed.

"Perhaps he needs some practice," Lucille replied, because she didn't think it was going to happen anywhere near here.

"Well, he can practice on his own time," Lucifer said, "I don't let amateurs near my piano."

Lucille didn't consider herself an amateur, and since Lucifer had let her play she assumed they were in agreement on this. Offering to play was the reason she was here, after all.

"You wouldn't want to have him scare away customers."

"Exactly," Lucifer said gravely. "Especially not with disco."

"I'm afraid I don't know what 'disco' is," Lucille said. "But I assume I don't need to, then?"

"Play disco? No, please don't."

"It would be hard, since I don't know what it is," Lucille replied. "But now I can't decide whether I am curious to find out what you find so terrible, or whether I should be content to remain ignorant."

"Oh, you are free to explore the world of disco on your own time," Lucifer said. A pause. "And granted, the parties were rather fun at the time."

"I wasn't questioning my freedom to do so."

Lucille smiled. "And I have never been very fond of parties."

That was perhaps changing a bit, mostly because of the company.

"Too bad," Lucifer said. "Because the alcohol was flowing and everyone was on drugs. And the suits were ridiculous."

Lucille, who had just recently experienced her first really bad hangover, wrinkled her nose a little.

"A lot of the clothes people wear here are ridiculous."

"Mhm," Lucifer said, though now he looked nostalgic. "Sometimes I do miss the 70s."

"For other reasons than alcohol, drugs and ridiculous suits?" Lucille asked, amused.

"No, specifically those," Lucifer pointed out. "Well. And all the gorgeous naked people in glitter I spent time with."

"Aren't there naked people in glitter here as well, occasionally?"

Not that Lucille had seen any herself, but she had seen people covered in glitter, and she assumed they took their clothes off together occasionally.

"Perhaps I am just making assumptions."

"Yes, but back then, it was all to excess," Lucifer said. "Not quite as much taste for that these days."

"It sounds truly decadent. How unfortunate the music didn't match."

That was Lucille's impression so far. And it didn't surprise her that the Devil should approve of excessive decadence.

If Lucifer had a middle name, 'hedonist' would be it. "You got used to it at the time," he said. "Quite different when Tiny is trying to ram it into my poor piano based on his iffy memories of the tune."

"That is understandable," Lucille said. "So will you play something that gives it more justice, even if it is not quite among your favourites?"

Be flattered, Lucifer. She asked for music composed after the previous turn of the century.

"Yes, but not 'I Will Survive'," Lucifer said, settling down behind the piano. "I have history with that song."

Stupid uppity pop stars.

"I wouldn't want you to play something that made you uncomfortable, of course," Lucille said, trying to ignore that she was actually a bit curious about that history.

"And I wouldn't," Lucifer said merrily.

He set his fingers down. Thought for a moment. And started to play.

Lucille listened, she really did, but when he had finished playing, she said:

"I have to admit that it is not a style of music that is to my taste. But you play it well, as always."

"I do feel disco tends to be better on drugs," Lucifer mused.

"I have little interest in drugs," Lucille replied, smiling. "So I will have to take your word on that."

"Luckily for you, there are many eras of music left to discover," Lucifer said, grinning. "Some of which are even good sober."

"There certainly are," Lucille agreed. "You do seem to have an interest in alcohol and narcotic substances though."

Which did go quite well with being the devil, she supposed.

"I enjoy the fun things in life," Lucifer said.

"What is fun is a matter of taste, is it not?" Lucille replied.

Occasionally the studio album version of that performance pops up on my Spotify and I always lose it over the fact they left all of Lucifer's snappish talk-singing in there.
