The Devil's Nest, Friday Night

"Have we not spoken about the jello?" Lucifer said, eyeing Tiny from his seat at the piano. "Because I see you reaching for the gelatin and I believe I have told you multiple times that we are not going to impede on Miss Smith's terrain here."

A pause.

"No, I don't care that she doesn't have an official trademark on it. Put the jello down and grab..." He tried to think of something shots-related that might jump out enough to keep Tiny occupied, "...Pop rocks for the rims or something."

Well. Apparently Tiny was going to spend the rest of the night lining up shots with brightly colored liquids and pop rocks on the rim on the bar. Might as well.

Lucifer sighed and turned back to the piano. "Where was I? Right. Everybody loves the things you do from the way you talk, to the way you move..."

He'll toss out a few danceable ones as well, we're sure.

At the piano, or by the bar.

Jessica was doing a very rare thing. She was buying the most expensive top shelf whiskey. A double. And taking it over to Lucifer and placing it in front of him.

"I know you can afford it. Just appreciate the gesture," she said, glaring at Tiny which he brought over a glass with pop rocks on the brim.

"And to what do I owe this wonderful bottle of excellent whiskey?" Lucifer said, picking up the bottle to study the label.

She shrugged. "I probably wouldn't have been able to handle all those jerks back in New York on my own," she replied. "A drink is the least I can do."

And that's how Jessica says "Thank you."

Tiny reappeared with a selection of colorful shots. Jessica just glared at him until he came back with a bottom shelf glass of bourbon.

Lucifer idly brushed pop rocks off of his glass. "Well, I was glad to be there," he said, pouring himself a glass. "But I'll take the whiskey."

"You are always welcome to tag along to New York whenever I have a case," Jessica said toasting him with her non-pop rock glass of cheap booze. "Maybe next time I'll have an actual case to solve."

"I would love to," Lucifer said, and took a sip of his drink.

Paused a moment to savor it before he added, "I sometimes miss solving cases."

"Is it the cases you miss or something else?" Jessica said giving him a knowing look.

Lucifer took another big sip.

"I do miss the work," he said.

More of an and/and than an either/or.

"Well I'd suggest you go bug Diaz about a job. But the only cases we get around here are about bees," she replied with an eyeroll.

"Please, no," Lucifer said. "I walked into the police office here one day to ask if they needed help, but the cases they had were all so thoroughly sad and boring."

"All right then," Jessica said with a nod of acknowledgement. "So what is your threshold for something interesting?"

"Murder, intrigue, and/or sex," Lucifer said, smirking. "You know. Not saving kittens from trees."

Jessica scoffed. “I have not. Nor will I ever. Save a kitten stuck in a tree. If it got up there it needs to figure out how to get down on its own.”

"That's what I keep telling people who get all upset about their cats being up there," Lucifer sighed. "The hairy animal got up there on its own, it can get back out. It's just needling you for your attention."

Jessica tilted her head in thought. "And what if the owner of the kitten was hot? Would you reconsider?"

"Do I seem that desperate to you?" Lucifer asked.
