The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

It had only been a couple of days, but so far Octavia felt the breakfast deal between her and Duke seemed to be working. It was... nice, to not leave it fully up to whims and moods when they saw each other. Something felt a little more solid, a little less unwieldy. Like knowing that whatever happened during her shift tonight, wherever she ended up staying the night, she would still see him tomorrow morning, over breakfast.

Of course, first she had to actually get through this shift. No piano or jazz this week, either. The playlist was a little heavy on Florence + The Machine and similar artists, and had not been handpicked by Octavia. But she also didn't mind it.

As the night wore on, though, she was starting to notice the club seemed to be curiously out of limes.

And rum.

(She was yet to notice the lack of bananas.)

But if you're after a banana daiquiri tonight, this is not the bar for you.

And hey, Dante had stuck around for an extra day before heading home. Might as well go bug Octavia, right?

"Hey, 'sup," he said, climbing onto a stool. "I'll have a strawberry vodka."

"Figures," Octavia rasped. She hadn't been reaching for it before he said so, but she might as well have been.

Also she was reaching for it now.

Dante laughed. "What, you know my order for sure already?" he said. "You're a good bartender."

"No one else orders this."

Also it had been kind of thing in a wholly unrelated conversation, but that was a little private.

She poured him his glass, and slid it over. And then sort of... paused to look the bottle over.

"I've only ordered it once," Dante protested, grinning.

Then he was a little busy drinking it.

"That's a hundred percent of the times I've served you here," Octavia retorted, absently.

She was getting herself a glass.

"Sorry," Dante said, unrepentant. "Usually me and the girlfriend head back to the boyfriend after class on Tuesdays."

Octavia's gaze flicked back to him for just a little too long to look entirely casual.

Then she looked down at the bottle again.

"What held you up this week?"

"Anders was working the morning shift, and I know him, he's gonna run long," Dante said, shrugging. "So I figured why not stick around for the day and go bug the one bartender I still know?"

"I'm touched," Octavia drawled. While she poured herself about a sip's worth of the vodka.

Well, maybe two.

"You ever start digging back into the music here?" Dante asked, still sipping his own vodka.

"Does this sound like something Lucifer would play?"

Did she know whether he knew Lucifer at all?

And did it matter?

No, and no. She shrugged, vaguely, as she put the bottle away. "I've changed the playlists a couple of times."
