There was a raccoon at the lunch counter. It looked somewhat worse for wear, and clearly expected something from Duke.

". . . Octavia?" he asked. The raccoon looked unimpressed. "Just checking!"

The raccoon slid a beat up $20 across the counter. Duke took it.

"You want the special?"

The raccoon chittered.

"... Right. Coming right up."

Broiled oysters on the half-shell

Luke's was open. Don't mind the raccoon gleefully dipping oysters in melted butter at the lunch counter.

He has long since learned not to question these things.

He did make sure there was a stack of napkins next to the raccoon though

Travis stopped in on his way back to the station, still getting a lay of the land.

And stared at the raccoon at the counter. "... There is no way that's up to code."

Duke looked from the new guy to the raccoon, and shrugged.

"We'll clean up after him."

Travis opened his mouth to object, but honestly, after his conversation with the mayor, he was mostly just tired.

"Can I get a coffee? Assuming your other customer hasn't stuck his hands in the pot?"

Duke pressed his hand to his chest, letting out a little gasp of offense. "Please! We're professionals!"

He grabbed the coffee cup and a mug.

"You want anything to eat, uh. . . ." He gave Travis's uniform a once over. ". . . Officer?"

"Firefighter," Travis said. "Not a cop. Travis Montgomery."

"Ah, newbie!" Lucifer called, once he'd spotted Travis, and gave a wave. "I see you've finally met Duke. He's the one who got strung up above that volcano that one time!"

"Lucifer," Travis said with a soft sigh. "Your girlfriend's boyfriend serves lunch to raccoons. I should have guessed."

Lucifer followed that description with a squint. "Technically speaking, I'm sleeping with both of them," he pointed out. "And at least this time the raccoon isn't Octavia."

"... Right, she mentioned being a 'raccoon'. She used to work at the brewery?"

Travis was just going to glide right past that relationship arrangement, since she'd been right--that was none of his business.

How an unimpressed look from the raccoon had somehow convinced him it wasn't Octavia, the world would never know.

But in case he had any doubts left, here was his snogon coming in, carrying a bag from the Bookbelt. "Ha yun, jaka."

It was the wrong unimpressed look.

"Ha yun, gona," Duke answered with a broad smile. "How's it going?"

Sorry, Octavia had just noticed the raccoon.

So now she was looking at the raccoon. Yes.

"En ha yun, snacha."

The raccoon splashed his paws in the melted butter and chittered happily at her.

"Friend of yours?" Duke asked, teasing.

"Could be," Octavia said slowly, not sounding at all like she was joking. There were a lot of raccoons on this island, and she'd definitely met several during her time as one.

"Chit yu vout in, strikon? Yu laik ai lukot?"

No, she didn't expect to get an answer.

Travis nodded to her. "Octavia."

Octavia bro-nodded back at him.

"New guy."

Yes, she'd remembered his name correctly, but where was the fun in that?

Travis bit back a sigh. "Travis," he offered again. He figured she might be messing with him, but it was hard to tell on that deadpan.

"I know," Octavia said. Not even remotely sorry. "Try not to let the raccoon freak you out too much."

Lucifer had never visited Duke at the diner before. There had been over a year of diner-related cracks, and he refused - refused - to give in on that one.

Except he was bored. Really, exceptionally bored. And when he walked past said diner, there was a raccoon eating oysters.

So obviously he had to go in and at least see what was going on. "Please tell me that isn't Octavia again."

"That's not Octavia again," Duke said obediently. "Apparently it's just a raccoon who got hit by a rickshaw and decided it deserved a treat for surviving."

"I don't know whether I'm disturbed or impressed by the fact it knows how to eat an oyster," Lucifer said, staring at it.

"I mean, I think it's mostly just tearing them off with its teeth. And playing with the butter."
