The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

The weekend had been a bit uneven, but it had come out all right somewhere in the middle. (Duke's redecorating really had been epic.)

But processing the events of the past few weeks - or quarter-processing them, as was Lucifer's wont - was a thing all on its own, and his mind was drifting somewhere pensive again.

Obviously, that couldn't stand.

"Just put the Manhattan and a Fitzgerald on the specials board," he dictated to Tiny. "A conversation last weekend has me thinking First Lady of Jazz this week."

Tiny sighed, but did as he was told.

Lucifer's not kidding about the Ella Fitzgerald mood.

At the bar, or at the piano.

It was time for Lucille to stop by and play something, wasn't it? At least she thought so herself, and she had practiced a few new pieces that she found suitable.

She wasn't going to interrupt Lucifer, of course, so she waited near the piano until he had finished playing, a glass of wine in her hand.

He finished the last song with a flourish, and looked up. "Ah, miss Sharpe," Lucifer greeted. "Here for the piano, I assume?"

"Unless you mind, of course," Lucille said. "I wouldn't want to drive you away."

"No, I was going to take a break as-is," Lucifer said, sliding out from behind the piano. "Try not to depress Tiny too much. He's had a rough weekend."

"Did the holiday upset him?"

Lucille was aware that her taste in music could sometimes be melancholy.

"Perhaps he ought ot learn that music can be quite suited to express emotions that one otherwise prefer to keep hidden."

"I don't want him near my piano again," Lucifer said flatly.

"I meant that listening to it can offer the same thing," Lucille said. "But now I'm curious, what did he do to the piano?"

"Tried to play 'I Will Survive'," Lucifer said tersely. "Can I get him to make you a drink while you get set up?"

"I am not familiar with that song," Lucille said. "A drink would be lovely though, thank you."

"It's disco," Lucifer reminded her. "What would you like? A Manhattan, perhaps?"

"Was that the song you wouldn't play?"

Disco hadn't made a big impression.

"A Manhattan will be fine."

She wasn't sure what it was but it couldn't be too terrible.

"Yes," Lucifer said, and then waved at Tiny. "Get the lady a cocktail. She'll be playing tonight."

Tiny sighed.

"So, tell me, what is so terrible about that song? Or is it just Tiny?"

Was that sigh about the drink or about her playing? She didn't care either way.

"I once had to do it as a duet with an extremely annoying pop star," Lucifer said. "That rather ruined it."

"Ah. I suppose that makes sense," Lucille said. "So you do duets?"

"I do music," Lucifer replied. "Sometimes with other people."

"Should you be interested I do enjoy duets."

She didn't have much experience of them, and playing with a close friend like Tisarwat as a part of teaching was quite different.

Was it terrible of her that playing music with the Devil himself was a very tempting thing?

"Well, if you can find a piece that marries our styles, I'd be happy to play one with you."

"Is there anything I have played so far that is to your taste?" Lucille asked.
