The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

Look who'd actually managed to drag herself to work this week! Sure, Octavia was spending a decent portion of her evening busying herself with inventory and letting Tiny handle the majority of the customers, but...

Baby steps.

Tonight's music was on the more melancholy side of piano bar-y. That suited Octavia just fine. There were times to be loud, and this wasn't it.

Duke ducked in on his way home from his class, just in case she had come out to work today. He happened to catch a moment when she wasn't hiding, and he bit back a broad grin.

"Ha yun, gona."

Octavia gave him a little nod. Didn't smile, but something softened in her expression. "Ha yun, jaka."

She'd still seemed a more than a little tired, this week. But there was more life in her than there had been last week.

She'd actually dragged herself out somewhere public. That was phenomenal, in Duke's opinion.

He slipped onto a bar stool and leaned his elbows on it. "What do you recommend tonight?"

Octavia leaned against her hands on the edge of the bar, across from him.

"Alcohol."

Ha ha.

Duke chuckled. "Good choice. I love alcohol!"

"You're getting bourbon," Octavia informed him.

Though she didn't push away from the bar, yet.

“Sounds great,” Duke said. He wasn’t going anywhere, either.

So after a moment of just quietly watching him, Octavia reached out for him as she leaned in a little.

So she could give him a very quick kiss.

Duke shifted to meet her, then stayed where he was when the kiss ended.

“That was even better than bourbon.”

"You haven't had the bourbon yet," Octavia rasped.

And finally pulled away to go get some.

Duke watched her go.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm right, though."

"Biased," Octavia chided, too mildly to sound like it mattered much. She got a glass, got the bourbon. Poured one in the other, then brought it back over.

And said, "There's something I should tell you."

"Well yeah," Duke said. "What's up?"

"Lucifer looked into some therapists for me," Octavia said, casual and mild, as she slid his drink across the counter to him. Her eyes were on the glass, though. "And I guess he's taking me to meet some on Friday."

“Huh.” Duke nodded, picking up the glass. He didn’t take a sip yet. “Yeah, he texted me a bunch of numbers too.”

Well. That got Octavia to look up.

"He didn't mention that part."

“No?” Duke shrugged. “It’s not really a big deal.”

"Didn't say it was," Octavia replied, a little softer. "What are you gonna do?"

Duke played with the rim of his glass, running his finger along the edge.

“I guess I’ll try calling some of them.”

Octavia nodded, trying to read his face.

"Good."

That he'd also lost his therapist had been kind of getting overshadowed by all her issues, hadn't it. She was realizing that now.

“Guess he didn’t think I needed an escort for it.”

He wasn’t sure what he thought of that fact. He was pretty busy pretending not to still be kind of annoyed that Lucifer had gotten the list for him in the first place.

Because that type of pretending always ended well!

"Guess not," Octavia agreed, very mildly.

What could possibly go wrong?

“I’m glad he’s looking out for you. I hope you find someone good.”

Octavia shrugged a little, finally taking that bottle of bourbon and --

Okay, she was actually going to get a glass and pour herself just a little bit of it.

Duke certainly wasn’t going to tell her not to. He sipped his own drink and changed the subject.

“Want anything in particular for breakfast tomorrow?”

Octavia shook her head, though just barely.

"Not really," she said, over the edge of her glass, just before a sip. "Whatever you feel like making."

Duke nodded. "I'm thinking . . . crepes. They're great with fruit."

"Sounds fine to me."

There was fruit involved. And it was food. And he was making it.

All these things made it very unlikely she would object.

Which was why he was suggesting it. It was something a little different, but that would include all the nice, familiar things he knew she liked.

He sipped his bourbon again to keep him from saying anything inane or ridiculous that might send her right back down, and instead extended his hand towards her, palm up. They could stay here and sip in silence if she wanted. He missed that, feeling comfortable being quiet with her.

Octavia reached out after a second. First just to brush her fingers over his palm, then to actually take his hand.

A thought was perkolating, but she didn't say anything just yet.

Duke gave her hand a squeeze and offered her a small smile as he sipped his drink.

He was beautiful. It felt a little like she'd forgotten that, over the last while.

The thought Octavia had been having found a form in words.

"You probably wouldn't mind if I was there even before breakfast, huh?"

... Slightly on the subtle side, but still.

"Not even a little," Duke said, squeezing her hand again. "You're welcome to be there whenever you want to."

"I want to stay the night."

Honestly, what she wanted in particular was to wake up next to him.

Duke sucked in a soft breath, and his face blossomed into a broad smile.

"I'd like that."

Octavia gave his hand a little squeeze.

"Yeah," she said softly, "I thought you would."

Find someone for a slow, melancholy shuffle.

Violence.
