Trooper Station, Friday

There had, apparently, been a rash of thefts around the island through the night. Nothing of actual value had been stolen, but the complaints were rolling in about, in no particular order, missing:

Pants buttons
Tabs from the tops of soda cans
Fridge lightbulbs
Tupperware lids
Keyrings (not, it should be noted, the keys themselves, just whatever item was being used to group them together)
Stickers on the router with the wifi password
Ice cube trays

Liam was, naturally, doing due diligence and sending the Troopers out to interview the complainants. Because immediately jumping to the conclusion that it was the work of the raccoons would be profiling, and that wouldn't do.

Steve sauntered in. "The guys out on case?"

If he sounded really surprised, it was because he was!

“Yup,” Liam nodded. “Sudden rash of robberies. Apparently.”

How closely had you checked your sock drawer today, Steve? Chances were most of the pairs had mysteriously become singles overnight.

"Are they taking coffee mugs?" Steve asked, looking at his desk where his World's Okayest Boss mug was not in its usual spot.

“Sounds about in line with the other complaints I’ve had today, yeah,” Liam nodded. “Just got off the phone with someone who complained that the plastic straw from his lotion pump bottle was missing.”

Steve blinked. "So a rash of...pointless stuff being taken?"

Don't get him wrong, he loved that mug, but it was a mug.

“Essentially,” Liam made a face. “The spoons were all missing from my cutlery drawer this morning. I assumed the mice had absconded with them for some reason, but maybe there was something else at work.”

"Raccoons?" Steve guessed like the profiler he was.

Not all raccoons, Steve.

“That was my first thought,” Liam admitted. “But I don’t actually have any proof, so I can’t go barging in without doing a little legwork first.”

"That where the guys went?"

[firstofitskind]

Liam nodded. “Interviews,” he said, lips quirking up in a bit of a smile. Because what was the point of being in charge if you couldn’t delegate the tedious stuff?

"And they're doing their own paperwork?" Steve asked hopefully.

“Now why,” Liam said, “would I deprive you of that joy when I know how fond you are of it?”

"Can't get enough of it," Steve lied, nodding.

That's why it was always in Danny's handwriting.
