Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Saturday

The garlands had all been taken down, the general explosion of red and pink all tidied away, and the remaining Valentine's Day candy and chocolates were on sale in the concessions stand.

In fact, judging by the marquee, the movie theater seemed to have skipped right back to a previous holiday:

Bucky didn't really know how he felt about this one, either. But at least it didn't involve two different New Yorks and the heartbreaking idea of being able to go back in time to where you belonged.

Buy some leftover Valentine's candy on the cheap, mod Ingrid, talk to Bucky, whatever.

"Well," Jesse said, stepping up to James, "This place is looking a lot less... festive than it did a week ago."

Bucky's expression was on the muted side of wry, as he looked up.

"Yeah," he said. "Ingrid went a little all-out with that one."

"I noticed," Jesse said. She waved back towards the door, where the marquee was. "Is this you wrestling back control?"

"This..." Bucky started, trailing off a little, then sort of sighing the rest, "is just Ingrid's idea of balance."

Jesse chuckled. "One day you're going to have to accept that you're in charge," she teased. "Not Ingrid."

"I don't wanna be," Bucky said, casual, quiet, like an afterthought to everything else. He'd already turned towards the concessions. "So. Can I interest you in some discount candy?"

Oof.

"Sure, why not?"

Jesse pulled out her wallet.

"What've you got?"

Bucky gestured vaguely at the end of the counter that housed all the red and pink stuff.

There were various types of candy in heart-shapes, mostly.

"Of course," Jesse said, sighing. "Fine, just load up a bunch. It's all just sugar in the dark."

Bucky picked a few of the things he knew tasted the least offensive (why he felt like he knew that, he couldn't say) (except yes he could) and rang them up.

"Ingrid'll be pleased to get rid of the stock."

"I'll bet," Jesse said, taking a few bills out of her wallet. "You can probably chuck the rest of it in the garbage by next week. It'll be rock hard."

Bucky shrugged. A little. "Doesn't all go bad that fast."

"The cheap stuff does," Jesse said. "Trust me."

The wry look was back again. There was something melancholy around the eyes, but then... There always was.

"Used to manage the candy store in town."

Jesse blinked. "Seriously?" she said. "I'm having a hard time picturing that."

The wry faded slowly away, as Bucky's gaze dropped back to teh candy between them. "It was a long time ago."

And how.

"Oh," Jesse said, wincing at his expression. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was painful."

Bucky looked halfway surprised as his gaze darted back up. "It's not --"

He wanted to say it wasn't painful.

But, was it?

The time at Wonka's was the same fuzzy and unreal thing as everything else. His expression smoothed back down, and he shook his head as his eyes darted evasively away from her face again. "It's... not really anything."

It's clear that much is a lie.

But I shouldn't say that.

"That's obviously not true," Jesse said. Dammit! "But we don't have to talk about it."

Bucky lifted his shoulders, but only barely. His voice even, casual.

Final.

"Enjoy the movie, Jesse."

"You're not coming?" Jesse asked.

Yeah. I screwed that one up.

Bucky shook his head as he finally looked up at her again. Barely, mostly just through his lashes.

"Not this time."

"Maybe next time," Jesse said, and flashed him a quick smile, picked up her candy, and turned to go.

Bucky's nod was a little delayed. Only happened once she'd already turned.

He didn't say anything.

He just watched her back until she disappeared into the auditorium.

Dr. Frankenstein dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster out of lifeless body parts.

Jfc I am so tired this weekend.
