Devil's Nest | Monday Night

Annie was tan, content and...relatively relaxed, all things considered, after her trip to Hawaii. (There had only been one murder drone, and yet so much more luau/surfing/laying on the beach, you know?)

"Did you have a nice break?" she greeted Tiny, immediately grabbing some ice, Curacao and the blender in a way that had Tiny heading for the other end of the bar before she even finished her sentence. Before she could even think about taking out her phone and showing him a damn picture.

Oh well. She was going to make Blue Hawaiians her drink special, and pretend it wasn't rainy and gross outside, sigh.

"Annn~ieee~!" Summer sang as she swept into the bar and plopped down on a stool, and then got to the important stuff: "Ohmygod, that tan!"

Hi, please to not mind the pale redhead super dying of jealousy right now, thaaaaanks.

"Suuuuuuummer!" Annie returned in kind, and then obligingly preened a little to show off that tan. "Thank you! Turns out it's all, like, bright in Hawaii. How was Japaaaaaan?"

Not that Annie didn't have a good idea, having gotten the photographic play-by-play and all.

So. Many. Pictures, Annie. Sooooooooooo many.

"Japan was gooooooooood," said Summer, because apparently they needed to drag out so many vowels, it'll make a Wheel of Fortune fan sweat. "Still kind of pissed about someone totally bailing on it."

Not really.

"But, you know, whatever, it's totally fine."

It totally was.

But what fun was that?

"I knooooow, but I didn't bail," Annie corrected with faux exaggerated regret, "I was just invited on a different trip. And I bet yours didn't have a murderous drone or a plane full of Russian agents landing in the middle of a major city, so like, your vacation was probably more vacation-y!"

Unless it had and Summer just hadn't sent pictures of those things -- which, to be fair, Annie had also not taken photos of her murder drone so much as, like, cute beach and luau and surfing-attempt pictures -- but if that was the case then Annie really would have some FOMO regarding Japan.

Jessica didn't so much sweep into the bar as she did just... saunter?

Whatever. She walked in. And sat at the bar, completely ignoring Tiny and the drink special.

"Hey. Welcome back," Jessica said... for once not asking for a drink as a greeting. Almost like maybe she missed having people around to interact with but in no way admitting it.

"Bourbon."

Hey, she can't deviate too far from her standards.

And look at how Annie was already reaching for the bourbon! Wasn't it nice to be so known, Jess?

"Thanks! I take it you did not go to Japan?" Annie guessed.

This would be the first time in a week someone else poured Jessica a drink. It was nice to be relieved of such a burden.

"No. Went to New York briefly to check in on a friend," Jessica said with a shrug. "Spent most of it here working."

Well... drinking is work, right?

"Anything fun?" Annie asked curiously, pushing the glass over. "I went to Danny and Steve's version of Hawaii and helped with a whole, like, Russian espionage thing."

So also kind of working!

Jessica hesitated before taking a sip of her drink. "My friend... he's whatever you call a guy with unbreakable skin and can bench press a Buick. Started playing hero in Harlem taking out a crime ring. Got the shit beat out of him and then arrested for his effort. Which sounds boring next to Russian espionage in Hawaii."

"My kind of guy," Annie noted with a little surprise. "So did you, like, go bail him out? And, like, don't get too jealous -- I also went to a luau and took a surf lesson."

Which, you know, call her crazy, didn't seem like Jess's scene.

Yeah, no. Summer totally would have sent a million pictures of, like, all of that.

"It didn't," she admitted, with almost a small frown of disappointment at that. "And that's still bailing. You could have totally said no and bailed on that vacation just as easily."

Summer probably wouldn't have done that, in Annie's place, but that was besides the point.

"But whatever, I was just besties with Kathy instead, while you got stupid tan and dealt with Russians and murder drone. Nbd."

"Surfing and a luau. Did you wear a grass skirt too on your breaking of a Russia spy ring?" Jessica asked without a trace of jealousy.

Let's face it: a complexion this pale in Hawaii would be a disaster.

"As for my friend... he should have stayed out of the limelight. He broke out of jail when a guard tried to kill him. No bail. Just thrown back in prison for a crime he didn't even do. I'm working on that though."

You know who brought a kid into a bar? This guy right here.

Admittedly, he was also prone to taking the kid into gun fights. But that was for good reason, okay? Good. Reason.

But in he walked, kid toddling along after him. Now that people were apparently back or something. Getting the lay of the land.

"I wore a lei," Annie offered, because of course she had.

But she sobered a bit all the same, tapping her fingertips on the bar lightly. "Anything I can help with?" she asked, a little concerned. "For your friend, I mean."

"I don't know if I know Kathy." She didn't, but Starlight knew Banzai, so...close enough? "If it helps, I was super jealous of karaoke! You know I would've gotten all up in that. Instead I failed at surfing and yelled at Steve for getting shot."

Probably no one had gotten shot in Japan! (Probably?)

"Hey there," Annie greeted the...robot man? Space man? She hadn't noticed the baby yet, which you could tell because wasn't cooing in delight. "How's it going?"

Presumably the guy wanted a drink, right? Even if she wasn't seeing a mouth. Maybe he'd take his helmet off in a sec.

And Summer didn't know Banzai! So it balanced out, maybe?

"Bold talk," drawled Summer pointedly, with a point of her toothpick, "for someone I'm pretty sure I've only seen up on the stage at Caritas, what? Like, once? And I'm actually now a little surprised and disappointed over the fact that no one did get shot over the room situation. "

At which point her face broke into a smirk.

"They shoved all seven of the teachers from That One Class into a single room at each stop," she elucidated.

Jessica frowned over the rim of her glass. And gulped down her drink. "Well if he gets shit on in court I'd say I need help breaking him out. But he'd probably insist on staying and doing his time. Like an idiot."

She frowned a bit more and pushed the empty glass towards Annie.

"Right now it's just paperwork. If I need help I'll... I'll ask."

She fumbled a bit for the right words.

"Thanks."

There it was!

No, that was for private alone time, Annie. Geeze.

Din nodded in greeting, placing his hands on the bar top and carefully assessing the clientele. "A water. For the little one."

"The scam class?" Annie checked, eyes wide. "No way, that's kind of amazing. I mean -- " she had to add, smirking a little, "I heard there were some slightly less obvious scams going on, and presumably you guys didn't get busted, but that's....amazing. Oh my God. Poor Stark."

Yeah, Stark was the one she really felt sorry for, there. Everyone else probably deserved it. (She only knew half the teachers, so there was that.)

So. Jessica had seen plenty of things since coming to Fandom. Weird guys in white armor who acted as the police force. The devil running a bar. Killer inflatable reindeer.

So a new guy in armor? Not so much as a raised eyebrow. But the walking frog with ears wearing a burlap sack? That was strange.

"Is that a pet or something?" Jessica asked.
