Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Sunday

It was another quiet, slow Sunday at the movie theater. And Bucky was spending most of it in the office with a pile of paperwork Ingrid had shoved at him when he'd come in.

The door was halfway open, though. No reason.

Buy candy, wait around, try your luck with the office.

Well, James had said it was okay for her to come over.

But upon entry, Jesse didn't see him anywhere. She cast Ingrid a questioning look, and got waved--

Towards the office.

She knocked on the inside of the door.

"Hey."

And there was Bucky, sitting behind at the desk with all the ease of a man who wasn't really made for sitting at desks. Or necessarily even for experiencing ease in the first place.

But he looked up, and his lips curved faintly.

"Hey, Jesse."

"Trying to look like an actual manager today?" Jesse asked, faintly amused.

The shrug was predictably tiny, followed by an equally small and vague nod towards the mess of papers on the desk.

"Just something Ingrid shoved at me."

It may well have been meant to make him look more managerial.

She leaned against the doorway. "Want to escape and go watch a movie?"

Bucky glanced past her into the lobby. Towards the auditorium, but that was kind of hard to actually see from this angle.

"I don't know anything about what's showing today."

That was sort of wry. Also not a no.

"Great, then we can both be surprised," Jesse said, grinning.

Bucky's gaze dipped in time with his lips curving, though that was wry, too. He barely realized he was doing it.

"S'pose that's fair," he said.

And moved to get up.

"Though I think I actually heard about this one," Jesse added. "I mean, I didn't see it, but I think it came out when I was young."

"Yeah?" Bucky asked, nudging some of the papers away from the edge of the desk as he got up. "Anything good?"

"I know it's a romcom and Ben Affleck's girlfriend is in it?" Jesse volunteered.

Which showed how much attention she'd been paying to showbiz news.

Bucky understood at least some of those words, judging by his face as he looked up at her, finally free of the papers to step away from the desk and nod for the door.

"I'll take your word for it."

"Please don't," Jesse said, stepping back so he could walk through. "I've never actually seen it, so people could've just been messing with me."

Bucky shrugged as he stepped into the lobby, closing the door behind himself. Not that there was anything particularly confidential back there.

"I won't know the difference either way."

"At least that saves me feeling embarrassed if you hate it," Jesse said, sticking her hands in the pockets of her jacket. "Do you want any snacks?"

Bucky glanced towards the concessions stand, and studiously ignored Ingrid's little half-smirked smile.

"Not really," he admitted. "Do you?"

"I'll just grab a soda really quick," Jesse said, walking to the concessions stand quickly, money already in hand.

Ingrid was there, ready to cheerily serve her.

Bucky hang back, hands awkwardly stuffed in his pockets.

Jesse paid for her soda quickly, and then hurried back to him. "Sorry," she said, "I've just been aching for some sugar for some reason."

"You don't need to apologize," Bucky said, softer than was necessary for something that was supposed to strive for a jokey tone. "I'm supposed to sell you things."

"I know, it's just... something to say, I guess," Jesse said wryly. "You're a terrible salesman, by the way."

Bucky nodded towards the auditorium, before then taking the first steps towards it.

"Ingrid keeps telling me that, too."

Maybe it was because he didn't even try.

"And she'd know," Jesse said, following towards the auditorium.

"Always point out to her that she's here. That makes me... irrelevant."

Saying that in a semi-upbeat way didn't make it sound less self-deprecating, Buck.

Yeah, Jesse looked at him. "Ouch," she commented.

Bucky glanced back at her. Shrugged. It was small and light.

Then he slipped into the auditorium.

A girl makes a wish on her thirteenth birthday, and wakes up the next day as a thirty-year-old woman.
