The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

Yesterday had certainly been a big blast of whatever, and Lucifer was glad to put it behind him. Just about as glad as he was to be back in the club, behind the piano.

Dealing with the fact Tiny had hired an accompanying guitarist for some godforsaken reason.

What followed was about an hour's worth of passive-aggressive musical battle, until somehow, inexplicably, they fell in sync on a Tracy Chapman song.

Lucifer would take it for the evening. And then bar the man from ever coming back again.

"I have no qualms about breaking the guitar over his head," Jessica informed Lucifer as she showed up with her ever-present glass of bourbon in her hand.

Please note she had no idea that Lucifer possibly disliked the guitarist. Honestly she disliked change and the guitar ruined her Tuesday night aesthetic.

"It would certainly be poetic justice," Lucifer said, scowling at the man from across the bar.

(He might also have justice and/or vengeance on his mind right now, so her mood fit his perfectly.)

"Cool."

And without hesitation walked over to the guitarist and smiled.

"Hi."

She then grabbed the guitar out of their hands and unceremoniously dropped it on the ground. She smashed the guitar with one stomp of her boot and then picked it up; handing it back to the guitarist.

"Thanks."

She then walked back over to the bar and got a refill on her drink.

"So. What's new with you?" she asked Lucifer.

"Well, I'm hoping this means I won't have to go through the trouble of banning him from the club for life," Lucifer said, having watched that with deep professional interest. "Though come to think, I had been looking forward to torturing him a bit first."

Someone was definitely sublimating.

"Well if you torture him it's very likely he's not going to come back," Jessica pointed out. "Unless he's an idiot."

"I know, but we've gone for the guitar rather early, he might just leave n--"

He gestured at the man as the guitarist stalked towards Tiny. "--ow."

"Not a fan of acoustic guitar?" Duke guessed.

"I like piano and/or axe throwing in my bars," Jessica said with a smirk. "Guitar playing doesn't belong here. It's like going to a party and the guy in the corner is playing a guitar. Not because he likes it but he thinks it makes him look cool."

She paused a moment looking over Duke trying to get an idea where he was on the Haven Trauma scale.

"How you holding up?" she asked "Luce mentioned you were having a rough time recently."

"Oh, he's been talking about me, has he?" Duke flicked a bemused glance in Lucifer's direction. "Good to know." He gave her a shrug and sipped his bourbon. "I'm fine. Thanks for asking."

"Yes. In his own way. Which usually involves complaining about how everything is about him. But really it was about you," Jessica said with an amused look towards Lucifer. "Good to know you're fine because now he can complain about something else to me."

Duke had spent the last two days throwing himself bodily into Unnecessary Boat Projects to try to realign his brain into something a little less self-indulgently pathetic. After installing a handrailing on the stairs to the gangplank, setting up a new autopilot with a state-of-the-art GPS system, and sticking a tiny go-pro on a porg for shits and giggles, he was feeling more or less normal again, and fully intended to make the most of it before his mood took another dramatic downturn.

"Hey." He leaned against the piano, as was his wont, glass of bourbon in hand. "Tracy Chapman, huh? Nice."

"Well, if that ridiculous guitarist insists on making noise near me, we had to find some kind of middle ground," Lucifer said irritably, well before he even looked up and actively noticed it was Duke.

"Tiny hired him for the night," Lucifer said, which wasn't an answer.

(He had just really needed a nemesis.)

"I see you've decided to go out in public again."

Duke bobbed his head in a nod as he sipped his bourbon. (He'd skipped the booze for, like, two days, he'd earned this.) "I did. Got some work done on my boat. Including a fancy new GPS autopilot, in case you guys get stranded on it again."

"I can absolutely make him disappear," Eric said helpfully, gesturing at the guitarist. "Tiny too."

"I am already handling it," Lucifer said primly. "A bit of psychological torture and we'll never see him again."

The people he was dating were both having Dramatic Issues and being weird and/or profoundly stupid about them. At this point Lucifer just desperately needed the excuse to make someone's life hell.

Yesterday was both Series Wrap Day on the very last shoot for Lucifer and the day we finally found out the release date for the upcoming half-a-season and my fannish emotions are all over the place.
